Friday’s sixth annual May Plant Credit Union Kickoff Classic at Lugoff-Elgin had just about everything you could ask for from an evening of high school football … and more.

The trio of games included everything from great performances, last minute heroics and a great atmosphere at L-E Stadium.

In the nightcap of the three mini-games, L-E and Ridge View played to a scoreless tie in a contest in which defense dominated and offense was lacking.

L-E head coach Scott Jones was pleased with how his players performed, but admitted there is still work to be done.

"The defense is about as good as I think they are," he said of his troops. "Offensively, we don’t know our right from our left and left from our right. We just have a lot of work to do. Ridge View’s a pretty good defensive team; we shot ourselves in the foot too many times. We had a ton of penalties.

"We have to get that out of our system and figure it out. We just weren’t in synch."

Both teams keeping the ball between the 20s in this one with the Blazers picking up two first downs to L-E’s five as the Demons’ defensive line was on the attack all night long.

"If anyone is going to try and run it on us they are going to have a hard time," Jones said. "Our guys are good up front. They did great … as good as you can play on defense obviously with a goose egg on the board."

At the end of the night, the most important thing was that no one got hurt in any of these mini-games. Not even a cramp. And that is, obviously, the key considering none of these games counted on the record and all six teams are just five days from starting their respective regular season campaigns.

As the Demons closed out their pre-season slate and perpare for the start of the 2011 season, Jones said his team is failry healthy and prepared to begin games which count.

"We have a few ‘boo-boo’s’ here and there; nothing major," he said. "I think these guys will be fine and ready to go next week against Fort Mill."

The Demons kick off their regular season against Fort mill on Friday in a 7:30 p.m. start at L-E Stadium.

Darlington runs past Knights:

North Central will open the season with back-to-back road games, beginning with Friday night’s visit to meet Green Sea-Floyds.

Rams hold off West Florence:

Dillon Rivers threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Markel Melton in the back of the end zone with five seconds left in the game as Chesterfield tripped up 4A entry West Florence, 7-0, in the middle game of the MPCU Kickoff Classic.
Darlington received big plays from freshman tailback Treyvon Thomas while quarterback Malcolm Isaac threw for a touchdown and ran for another in a 21-0 win over North central in Friday evening’s opening contest.
