Tea Party would have us become third world country

I read with dismay Mr. Risvold’s Aug. 16 letter to the editor and, as I also am a proud American, I feel I must reply to some parts of it.

First of all, I voted for Sheriff Matthews and Councilman Jones, and based on what was written in the Aug. 16 letter I am really proud and happy that I made the right voting choice. I will definitely vote for them again, should they choose to run. Mr. Risvold’s letter confirms my belief that these two men are men of intelligence and integrity, and are two of the best public servants in Kershaw County. I have neither heard nor read any remarks by these two men about the Tea Party that I would consider in any way to be vulgar or slanderous. In my opinion, their remarks are right on the mark.

Furthermore, I take issue with the statement about the Tea Parties “standing up against the destruction of our country.” This is utter nonsense. The Tea Parties are opposed to most of the programs that have been developed over the course of the last century to improve this country -- programs that have built the middle class, stabilized banks and our financial systems, protected the environment, and saved many poor and elderly people from destitution. These are programs that have made America the great and powerful country that it is.  Destroying these institutions will exacerbate the decline of the middle class and will wreak widespread suffering upon millions of people. Put simply, the Tea Party Program is a prescription for turning this country into a third world country -- a catastrophe I hope never to see happen. A more appropriate Tea Party motto is “standing up for the destruction of our country.”

Mr. Risvold is rightly deserving of respect for his distinguished military career, fighting against the foreign extremists who have tried to destroy America. My advice to him, and to all veterans, is to get as far away from the Tea Party extremists as possible.
