LFD to host memorial event in honor of fallen 9/11 firefighters

The Lugoff Fire Department will host a 9/11 Memorial event Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. at the Lugoff-Elgin High School Staduim. Firefighters from across South Carolina as well as family members and citizens are invited to attend. The event will begin with a media press conference at 9 a.m. Around 9:30 a.m., firefighters and attendees will be allowed to climb the stadium steps to remember the 343 firefighters who gave their lives in the World Trade Center attack 10 years ago this year. Each firefighter will ring a bell before walking the stairs and firefighters are asked to wear T-shirts or helmets representing their respective departments. Family members and citizens are also welcome to participate in this event and walking can be done on the running track for those who cannot walk the stadium steps. A steel beam from the the World Trade Center on display throughout the duration of the event.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for all of us to show that indeed We Will Never Forget this tragic event in American History,” LFD Chief Dennis Ray said.

Parking will be available at Lugoff-Elgin High School, Lugoff-Elgin Middle School and the lots adjacent to the Stadium. Firefighters are asked to gather on the football field behind the podium at 8:45 a.m. and wear footwear appropriate for walking the 343 steps up and down the stadium steps. The event will occur rain or shine.

The stadium is located at 1284 U.S. 1 South Lugoff, SC 29078 and driving directions can be obtained at http://lhs.kcsdschools.com.
