Carl Eugene “Buddy” Herring, beloved son of William A. and Melba McBride Herring, left us on August 26, 2011, to join those loved ones who went before him.

Carl was born on May 14, 1941 in Wilson, NC. He spent his youth in Goldsboro, NC, moving to Columbia, SC to attend Dreher High and the University of South Carolina. While at USC he was a member of Sigma Nu Social Fraternity, Kappa Sigma Kappa Service Fraternity and the Student Senate.

Carl moved to Hialeah, Florida where he spent several years at Montanari Clinical School for special needs children. Recognizing the need for helping children in SC, he realized his dream by establishing Pine Grove School in Elgin, SC in 1970. He continued to help hundreds of children with love and devotion for 37 years.

In retirement, Carl moved to his condo by the ocean in Myrtle Beach, where he continued his compassionate service by serving on the board of Directors for SOS Health Care with emphasis on their Autism Program. He enjoyed being a “Secret Angel” for children who otherwise would not have had the opportunities they deserved.

Carl was on the Chairmans Commission at Brook Green Gardens. One of his greatest joys was watching sports on TV, especially the New York Mets.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Bill Herring and Jo, of Boone, NC, and sister and brother-in-law, Patsy Sauls and Jimmy of Columbia, SC.

Numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, whom he adored and supported with his love. Cousins and many loyal friends and step families, Chad, Marci, and Jack who supported and helped him the last few months.
Services of remembrance will be announced at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: SOS Health Care-Autism Program, PO Box 7136, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572 or to: Pine Grove School, PO Box 100, Elgin, SC 29045.

McMillan-Small Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
