Karissa Tolliver, a junior at Lugoff-Elgin High School, earned a third place award for her graphic design in the Graphic Arts Education Reseach Foundation (GAERF) 2011 Student Design Competition. Karissa is a student at the Applied Technology Education Campus (ATEC) in Camden.

The letter sent to Karissa upon receiving the award read, “The judges were impressed with the quality of the 225 entries, and it was a difficult task to choose only six winners. However after careful consideration, your submission stood out above the rest!”

Karissa’s work, pictured below and to the left, will be on featured in a special display during the GRAPH EXPO 2011 on Education Main Street Sept. 11-14 at the McCormick Place exhibition center in Chicago where printing industry professionals from around the world will gather. The GRAPH EXPO is organized by Graphic Arts Show Company, Inc. GASC’s mission is to provide an effective forum through shows and conferences to meet the marketing requirements of the graphic communications and converting industries.

From childhood, Karissa enjoyed creating art work on the computer using Microsoft Paint and drawing animated characters.

“When she entered Mr. (Walker) Canada’s class at ATEC during her sophomore year of high school, she felt as though she had found her dream career for life,” said Karissa’s mother. “We’re very proud of her.”

Karissa is the daughter of Chris and Karen Tolliver of Lugoff.
