Lady Demons give Mullins her first win as head coach

SENIOR SETTER SARA ANDREWS (right) helped lead Lugoff-Elgin to a season-opening win over White Knoll on Tuesday.

The Lugoff-Elgin volleyball team made first-year head coach Jessica Mullins’ debut a winning one as the Lady Demons opened the 2011 season with a 4-1 win over visiting White Knoll on Tuesday night inside the Demons Den.

L-E was slated to kick off its campaign by competing in a weekend tournament at Carolina Forest High School in Myrtle Beach, but the event was cancelled due to concerns regarding the path of Hurricane Irene.

In Tuesday’s opener against the Timberwolves, a fellow 4A entry, the Lady Demons dropped game one, 16-25, only to rebound take to the next four games by the scores of 25-23, 25-21, 25-16 and 15-9.

The Lady Demons had the rest of the week off before returning to the court next Tuesday when they travel to meet Richland Northeast at 7 p.m. in the Region 4-4A opening match.
