Chamber to form tourism committee

Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce Vice President of Tourism Teri Teed said a county tourism committee could be organized as early as January 2011.

The tourism committee will be comprised of individuals throughout the community, Teed said at Thursday’s chamber board meeting, and not only those who are just in the chamber.

Among responsibilities the tourism committee will be tasked with are exploring ways different businesses and agencies can work together at different events, and avoiding scheduling conflicts among many of the county’s events.

“I’m also working with (Chamber Executive Director) Liz (Horton) to come up with ideas for revenue-making events for the chamber and working with all organizations throughout the community,” said Teed, who is the assistant director of the Carolina Cup Racing Association.

Regarding the chamber’s advertising opportunities, Teed said she has approached both Horton and Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site about placing their logos on billboard ads the Colonial Cup has already placed in Columbia.

“It’s very visible and at the bottom we have all three logos. And we only ask $200 and that covers both of the ads from each of the organizations. We’re carrying the brunt of that,” Teed said. “We hope that it brings everybody to Camden for the weekend and not just for the event.”

The billboards are located at Two Notch Road and I-20 and on I-26 in the Harbison area.

In other news, the chamber will not be able to use a S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism grant it received last year. The grant, which was awarded to 22 organizations in South Carolina last year, is event-specific. It was originally planned to be used to offset costs associated with the chamber’s next Crappie Masters Tournament.

“However, we won’t be able to use that grant this year due to the timing of the award. It’s a reimbursement grant and expenditures have to have taken place between July 1, 2010, and before May of next year,” she said, adding that the chamber’s Crappie Masters tournament wouldn’t take place until 2012. “So even though we’re not scheduled to host that then, we’ll apply again next year and hope we’ll get that.”
