Is vacation over?

The numbers are in. They show that workers in Europe have more vacation days than Americans. In Italy, the average worker is allowed 42 days of vacation every year. In France it’s 37 days. In the United Kingdom, it’s 28 days. The U.S. is near the bottom of the list. People here average 13 days of vacation a year.

Meanwhile, workers in France lead the world. Eighty-nine percent of them take all of their vacation days. But workers in the U.S. take only 57 percent of their (13) vacation days. Are we better workers because we work so hard? Not likely, says one writer. We do make a lot of stuff, but we were working hard in the slow years, too.

So the advice is -- take a vacation. Some of us are out of work; taking “vacations” we didn’t want!  There was the summer when somebody was sick at my house. Neither the beach nor the mountains was possible. But there was a lawn chair. I took it out under the tree and relaxed every evening.

Question: What was the guy doing who was saying, “Take a vacation”? Bet you he was at work -- as usual.

Word List: average, Eighty-nine, percent, relaxed.
