Mr. Elmer John Lapsley died Friday, September 9, 2011 at Agape’ at Kathwood in Columbia, SC. He was born on March 25, 1915 in Glassport, PA, the son of Thomas Lapsley and Mildred Yohe Lapsley. He is survived by a daughter, Anne Jones and her husband, Steve, of Camden; grandchildren, Anne Porter Southworth and her husband, Jack, of Richmond VA, Spencer Jones and his wife, Julia, of Reston, VA; great-granddaughter, Anne Conway Southworth; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine, in 2005 and a brother, Roy V. Lapsley.

He was inspired to explore the world at the age of 22, traveling across Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand. He was inducted into the Explorers Club in New York City in 1982. He was president of Freed Co., Inc. in Waynesboro, VA for 43 years.

He and his wife, Lorraine, designed, planted and maintained a garden at their home in Virginiga. The garden, full of rhododendrons, tulips, azaleas, roses and dogwoods was opened to the public for 30 years.

Elmer and Lorraine will be laid to rest together in the Blue Ridge Mountains overlooking the Shenandoah Valley that they both so loved.
