'Did we learn that we are human?'

Sept. 11th marked a day of reflection for us as Americans, perhaps also a moment to ponder the lessons learned from that day and the many days that followed.

Did we learn that we can unite as one? Yes, but not perfectly. Although flags were flown, homage given, and praises sung for the “Red, White and Blue,” we lack perfect unity. Approaching an election year we are a divided nation, with what appear to be irreconcilable political differences. These differences have shaken the very foundation of our own government and have brought us to question what we have built upon that foundation.

Did we learn that we are strong? Yes, but not always. Great sacrifices have been made by service men and women as well as their families during the past 10 years. They fought and are fighting still for the free lifestyle that we have come to expect and enjoy. But for many of those returning, joy is a distant memory as they must battle both physical and emotional wounds.

Did we learn that we are human? This remains the unanswered question for each of us. For us to be human we must admit to being imperfect, often weak, and never holy. We can try with all our might, but without the grace of God nothing is free -- not even Americans.

May one day he bless us again.
