The following are excerpts of letters from Camden High School students Mayor Jeffrey Graham read into the record during Tuesday’s Camden City Council meeting. Per a request from the Kershaw County School District, the students are only being identified by their first and last initials.

We need places where we can hang out and chill. We need a teen spot with music, games, food, drinks, television and etc.

On weekends, when we don’t have nothing to do, we hang out at the teen’s spot.

…about the YMCA, I think that it is a great idea. We could have lots of things in one. Parents could be in the gym while their kids are doing something else. I think the YMCA would also be a safe place for families because if everyone wanted to do something different then there would probably be something for everyone and they would all be in the same place. I hope that you will take my ideas and opinions into consideration and I think that you are doing a great job serving as our mayor.

I hope that we can get some things in Camden for teens. If we had more for teens not as many teens would get in trouble. I’m not saying no more teens will get in trouble because they will. So this is what I think we need here in Camden.

I am in full support of the YMCA; this will be a great new addition to Camden. Also, you could put many different attractions in the YMCA like a hangout spot for teenagers. Also you could put a weight room in it along with a basketball court with a (track) that you could walk or run on. If we get a new YMCA, this will be great because I used to go to Columbia’s YMCA to work out and play basketball. With a YMCA in Camden this will be very convenient for myself and a lot of other people that I know.

The teenagers need an actual place to hang out … and the only time we have the place to hang out is at the Friday football games.

It would bring the younger crowd we’re looking for and newer families.

Thank you for taking the time for reading this letter. Also, for keeping your mind open for new ideas this town needs.
