Type 1 diabetes affects approximately 3 million Americans, and that number is growing rapidly. Every year, 15,000 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. That’s more than 40 children a day with this permanent non-reversible disease that prevents the body from being able to produce insulin. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has a sole purpose of helping find a cure for type 1 diabetes and is the largest funder of type 1 diabetes research. JDRF has annual fundraisers such as the “JDFR Walk to Cure Diabetes,” the “JDRF Gala” and the “JDRF Golf Tournament.” These events are organized largely by the board of directors and are a lot of fun for everyone.

This year, the Palmetto Chapter of JDRF has added a Young Leadership Committee. The YLC has organized a Poker Run called “Hawg-Wild for the Cure” Saturday.

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Thunder Tower Harley Davidson, the first bike out at 11 a.m. and last bike in at 2:30 p.m. The run will end at Skyline Club. All proceeds benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Registration cost $30, passengers $5 and additional hand $10. After the run, a live music will be provided by Mason Drive and Barbaque plates will be offered to all the riders. Prizes will be announced at 3:30 p.m. For more information, call 782-1477.
