Jesse “Buddy” Grant

Jesse Ronald “Buddy” Grant, Sr., 65, was called to eternal rest on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at Kershaw Memorial Hospital, Camden. Born in Kershaw County on September 10, 1946, he was the oldest son of the late Wallie Roosevelt Grant and Bertha Peay Grant, and the oldest grandchild of the late Will and Mattie Peay.

He attended Mather Academy in Camden and was a graduate of Jackson High School, Class of 1966. Jesse was employed by the Department of Mental Health of Columbia for over 30 years and retired in 2006.

He was a member of Unity United Methodist Church of Lugoff. Jesse’s greatest passion was singing. He began singing at an early age with the Ephesus United Methodist Church Choir and continued with such groups as the Gospel Six, The Gospel Ramblers and others. He established The Brothers of Harmony along with his brothers and directed the Angels Choir and the Willie Peay Singers.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories: his loving wife of 32 years, Hester K. Grant; three children, Donte’ Grant of Columbia, Kenyatta “Kizzy” Nelson of Greensboro, N.C., Jesse R. Grant, Jr. of Lugoff; two paternal aunts, Evelyn Williams of Queens, N.Y. and Juanita Flemings of Richmond, VA; three maternal aunts, Ellen Springer of Queens, N.Y., Lillian Massey of Lugoff and Dorothy Truesdale of Bronx, N.Y.; one maternal uncle, Richard Peay of Queens, N.Y.; three surviving brothers, Quincy and Franklin Grant of Columbia and Brook (Samantha) Grant of Lugoff; two sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; nine grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marion A. Grant and Norman (Linda) Grant, Sr.; one sister, Cynthia Jewel York; two uncles, Alfred Peay and the Legendary Brook Benton; and one aunt, Will Lee Cunningham.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m., Monday, October 17, 2011 from the Unity United Methodist Church, 1332 Fort Jackson Road, Lugoff, with the Reverend Dr. Augustus Rodgers, pastor, eulogist, assisted by Rev. Frank Williams, Jr.
Viewing was 2:00 – 5:00 p. m., Sunday, October 16, 2011 at the Ephesus Family Life Center (Ephesus United Methodist Church), 274 Lachicotte Road, Lugoff.

The family will receive friends at the home 1312 Old River Road, Camden.

The funeral procession will leave from the home at 1:25 p.m.

Floral bearers will be nieces and granddaughters. Pall bearers will be brothers and nephews.
