It’s the time of year when Outreach Bicycles for Needy Children continues to advance the cause of donating bicycles to a needy child. This year, Alesha Hudson’s (right) goal is to donate 100 bicycles. She did not reach her goal last year of 100, but was able to collect a total of 85 bikes and see 85 smiling faces.

This is the fifth anniversary of Outreach Bicycles. Alesha started this ministry at age 6 with the help of her grandmother, Mrs. Virginia W. Hudson. Alesha has given out more than 300 bicycles since the beginning to children ranging in age from 3 to 14 years old. The children are selected through the Department of Social Services (DSS) and school guidance counselors. Alesha is a sixth grade student at Stover Middle School in Elgin, a member of American Legion Juniors Post 203 for eight years, a Seagul student, sings on the choir at Unity United Methodist Church, and a Beta Club member. Alesha said that giving makes her happy and this is what God wants her to do.

Alesha and her grandmother said the community can make a difference by donating a bicycle or bicycles, making a deposit at First Palmetto Savings Bank, or sending a check to Outreach Bicycles for Needy Children at 1434 Baldwin Road, Lugoff, SC 29078.

The bicycles will be given out at Unity United Methodist Church on Dec. 17 at 1:30 pm. For more information, call 438-0145.
