Cahn: A bridge, SCDOT and a blocked road

There's a little story behind a photo I took which appeared on Tuedsay's front page. It's the one of Twenty-Five Mile Creek running under a bridge on Pine Grove Road in Lugoff.

Kershaw County Council unanimously passed two resolutions recognizing Lugoff's Swift Water Rescue Team and first responders from across the county during its meeting Tuesday for their actions during October's historic flood event.

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) seized a gun found in a purse outside an Elgin apartment during the early morning hours of Nov. 4 and then had to force their way into the apartment to make sure nobody had been hurt.

Kershaw County Council will consider a pair of resolutions during its meeting tonight recognizing the Lugoff Swiftwater Rescue Team (LSRT) and Kershaw County first responders for their actions during October's historic flood event.

Napper receives KCSF Price Award

Paul Napper, executive director of The ALPHA Center, received the 2015 Kershaw County Sheriff's Foundation (KCSF) Leonard Price Friend of Law Enforcement Award during a surprise ceremony Friday.

Amtrak train collides with logging truck in Cassatt

A northbound Amtrak passenger train struck a logging truck around 6 a.m. Monday just off U.S. 1 in Cassatt. According to Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews, the truck had just turned off of U.S. 1 on to Robert Reynolds Road. Railroad tracks hug U.S. 1 with the ungated and unlighted crossing just feet off the highway.

Pine Grove Road bridge to be closed until Spring 2016

A detour around a structurally damaged bridge on Pine Grove Road in Lugoff will remain in place until Spring 2016, according to a S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) engineer. SCDOT District One Engineering Administrator Bryan L. Jones said the hope is for the bridge to be replaced by the end of May 2016.

KH Foundation deciding its future

One organization is still deciding its future in the wake of Capella Healthcare and MUSC Health's takeover of KershawHealth. The KershawHealth Foundation is trying to decide not only its future, but exactly how it will disburse approximately $2 million in donations it still holds.

School board to continue facilities discussion

Facility needs will once again be the subject of discussion during a Kershaw County Board of School Trustees meeting tonight. Trustees, using information compiled from their own Oct. 20 reports of a series of public feedback meetings on facilities, will likely begin prioritizing those needs and, possibly, begin discussing exactly how to fund any projects.

KH board lauds longest serving members as transition begins

The KershawHealth Board of Trustees congratulated three of their own Monday night as they met for the last time as the governing body of the county's public hospital. When members meet again Nov. 9, they will do so as trustees of the Health Services District of Kershaw County. They will do so not at the Health Resource Center where they did Monday night, but at the Karesh Long Term Care Center, the only aspect of healthcare delivery in the county the board will oversee.
