‘Final’ KH board meeting tonight

At 6 p.m. today, the KershawHealth Board of Trustees will meet for the final time as the authoritative body governing all aspects of KershawHealth operations. Capella Healthcare of Franklin, Tenn., and MUSC Health -- the healthcare providing arm of the Medical University of South Carolina -- are set to take over most KershawHealth operations Sunday at 12:01 a.m.

KH board transfers contract authority to new chairman

In August, the KershawHealth Board of Trustees granted authority to former Chair Karen Eckford to sign documents on behalf of the board in connection with the pending takeover of most hospital functions by Capella Healthcare and MUSC Health. In late September, Eckford signed three documents constituting final agreements between KershawHealth and Kershaw Hospital LLC -- representing the Capella/MUSC partnership -- to purchase certain hospital assets; to lease the main hospital and Elgin center for 40 years; and for Capella to at least temporarily manage the Karesh Long Term Center, of which the board will retain control.

Trustees review public feedback on facilities

North Central area residents of Kershaw County feel as though they've been overlooked and want to keep their small, community schools open. People living in the Camden and Lugoff-Elgin areas want the Applied Technology Education Campus (ATEC) moved to a proposed joint economic development campus with Central Carolina Technical College (CCTC).

Online only: School board meets Tuesday

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees will begin discussing the feedback it received from a series of public feedback meetings on facilities tonight. The board will meet in the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) board room at the district's office on West DeKalb Street in Camden. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. and is open to the public.

Ordinances, bond proposal cause confusion, tension for KCC

Things were confused and tense during parts of Kershaw County Council's Oct. 13 meeting. The culprits: property owner zoning change requests and a potential $17 million general obligation bond for infrastructure improvements at the county's industrial parks. In each case, council considered second readings of ordinances which must pass three readings to be enacted.

Four county dams on DHEC emergency list

Four dams in Kershaw County are on a S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) emergency orders list. According to DHEC's website, the orders are part of the agency's "proactive assessment process" looking at what are known as "Class One" and "Class Two" dams across the state. DHEC emphasized even with emergency orders, there are no immediate threats to public safety.

Man arrested after standoff with officers in east Camden

Gas canisters thrown through windows and a S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) robot weren't enough to flush 43-year-old Shane Todd Allen out of an east Camden home Friday morning. A six-hour standoff ended when SLED agents themselves went into a house on Davis Street and found Allen hiding behind a piece of furniture in a bedroom, according to Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews.

Report reveals drowning victim was driving car

A Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) report reveals the man who drowned after his car was washed away off Pine Grove Road at Twenty-Five Mile Creek in Lugoff on Oct. 4 was driving the vehicle, not a female relative as first reported.

KCSD reschedules board, public feedback meetings

Due to conditions created by heavy rains and flooding a week ago, the Kershaw County School District cancelled both the Kershaw County Board of Trustees' Oct. 6 meeting and the last pair of public feedback on facilities meetings on Oct. 5.
