Missing child, parents located in New Hampshire

Charles Hughes Chandler, a 7-year-old boy reported missing by his grandfather just before Thanksgiving is now in the custody of his paternal grandmother in New Hampshire. According to Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) Capt. Steve Knafelc, the boy's grandmother took custody of Charles on Thursday.

Special election for Mickle’s Kershaw County Council seat set for March 29

A special election to fill the District 1 Kershaw County Council seat recently vacated by Willie Mickle is set for March 29, according to County Voter Registration Director John Caughman. Caughman said if more than one person files for their party's nomination to fill the seat, a primary would be held on Feb. 9. If necessary, a runoff would be held Feb. 23.

KH suffered $894,000 loss as hospital transferred to Capella

According to a financial report presented to the Health Services District of Kershaw County Board of Trustees at its Nov. 30 meeting, KershawHealth suffered an $894,000 loss just as a majority of hospital operations were being transferred to Capella Healthcare and MUSC Health.

Elgin disaster recovery center closing Saturday

The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster recovery center inside the Blaney Fire Department on U.S. 1 in Elgin will close at 3 p.m. Saturday. Despite the Blaney center's closing, Kershaw County victims of October's storms and flooding can still sign up for individual assistance through Jan. 4, 2016. They can also obtain in-person assistance by traveling to disaster recovery centers in Columbia, Bishopville or Sumter.

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies arrested 12 people for driving under the influence (DUI) during the Thanksgiving weekend. According to a KCSO press release, deputies only arrested one person on I-20; deputies made the remaining arrests on the county's secondary roads.
