Head-on collision claims lives

A head-on collision on Fort Jackson Road (S.C. 12) where White Pond Road becomes Porter Cross Road resulted in the deaths of a young couple early Sunday morning. According to the S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) Lance Cpl. David Jones reporting on a media hotline, online Real-Time Traffic Information website, the collision occurred just after 6 a.m.

eLearning ‘mock weather day’ before Thanksgiving

There's a good chance of "snow" about a week before Thanksgiving for the Kershaw County School District (KCSD). That virtual snowfall -- or flood, tornado or hurricane -- will happen one day in mid-November as the district conducts a "mock weather day" to test out what it will have put in place by then as part of its eLearning pilot program.

City may purchase two properties

According to a copy of its proposed agenda for its meeting tonight, Camden City Council may pass first readings of ordinances authorizing City Manager Mel Pearson to purchase two adjacent properties.

JTC now under Boys & Girls Club of Kershaw County

On the same day it received a $500 gift from an Elgin minister, the Jackson Teen Center (JTC) announced it is now officially operating under the auspices of the Boys & Girls Club of Kershaw County (BGCKC). The change actually took place July 1.

Suspects in shooting case seek reduced bond

Two suspects in a shooting and witness intimidation case have asked for reduced bond. Deputies arrested Rick Thomas Kennedy, 22, of Branham Avenue in east Camden, and Brandon Jamarr White, 33, of Pine Tree Drive, Cassatt, in mid-March following an alleged shooting incident reported on Feb. 26 near White's home.

Column: What should GOP moderates do?

I make no bones about the fact that I consider myself a centrist, moderate Democrat. When it comes to the country's finances, I don't believe in the pie-in-the-sky schemes of the extreme left-wingers in the party. On social issues, on the other hand, I admit to being pretty liberal, and yet am completely open to finding middle ground with moderate Republicans.

CFD smoke detector blitz goes big

The Camden Fire Department (CFD) recently installed 933 smoke detectors in homes in and around Camden, and they're not done yet. The CFD is in the midst of its annual smoke detector "blitz," trying to ensure that every home as at least one, if not more, smoke detectors.
