CPD, KCSO arrest four in string of vehicle break-ins

The Camden Police Department (CPD) and Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) may have caught up to at least some of the individuals responsible for a rash of vehicle break-ins in the city of Camden and in various locations out in the county.

Kershaw County Democrats pick Clinton amid low turnout

Unofficial results from Saturday's Democratic Presidential Preference Primary, show Kershaw County Democrats overwhelmingly chose former New York U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. Of the 4,889 Democratic votes cast Saturday, Clinton received 3,743 (77.13 percent); Sanders received 1,086 (22.38 percent); with former Dr. Willie Wilson and former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley trailing far behind with 13 and 11 votes, respectively, to earn .27 and .23 percent of the vote each.

Referendum, penny sales tax vote on school board agenda

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees will vote tonight on a possible referendum, which facility projects should be on the referendum and whether or not to use a 1-cent sales tax to pay for the projects.

Democratic presidential primary Saturday

Those who choose to vote in the state's Democratic Party Presidential Preference Primary will do so Saturday. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the same locations as the Republican primary a week ago.

County council approves Fiscal Year 2017 goals

During a brief, 20-minute meeting Tuesday, Kershaw County Council unanimously approved a list of Fiscal Year 2016-17 short- and long-term goals members and staff hammered out a Jan. 29-30 retreat. Council voted 5-0 with Councilman Sammie Tucker Jr. absent and the District 1 seat vacant until a special election set for March 29.

CPD officer arrested for act of misconduct

The S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) arrested a former Camden Police Department (CPD) officer for misconduct in office Friday morning. Marshall Lee Hardin, 41, is accused of watching pornography on his personal cellphone and masturbating while in his patrol car at a local park.

Good turnout for Republican primary

More than 25 percent of Kershaw County's 41,996 voters turned out for the Republican primary Saturday, casting 10,751 ballots for their choice of Republican presidential nominee. Kershaw County Voter Registration Director John Caughman said the 25.6 percent turnout was better than the statewide average of 24.7 percent.

Methe released on $200,000 bond

Jimmy Joe Methe, the 49-year-old man charged with voluntary manslaughter in the Feb. 13 fatal shooting of 17-year-old Brandon Scott Spencer, is now out on bond. During a brief appearance late Friday morning, Circuit Court Judge L. Casey Manning set Methe's bond at $200,000, but allowed him to pay a 3 percent minimum in order to be released from the Kershaw County Detention Center.
