Heart attack killed truck driver

A 72-year-old Lake City man driving an 18-wheeler died of a massive heart attack, causing the truck to go off the road and overturn on S.C. 341 (Bethune Road) on Thursday morning.

CHS, other schools participate in walkouts

Most of Camden High School's (CHS) student body walked out of their second block classrooms at 10 a.m. Wednesday. In a mostly orderly fashion, monitored by Principal Dan Matthews, Assistant Principal Lesley Corner and other administrators, they walked to the CHS gym and filled the bleachers on one side.

Camden council honors Price House Commission

A year after body found, still no arrests in Davis case

Almost exactly a year ago, on March 8, 2017, a hand-written set of GPS coordinates led Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies to a shallow grave in Lee County. There, they found the body of Adam Ray Davis, 35, who had been missing since Dec. 29, 2016.

Council recognizes officer, firefighter of the year

During its Feb. 27 meeting, Camden City Council recognized two of its own for being named the local Veteran of Foreign Wars' (VFW) officer and firefighter of the year. Recently, the VFW named Camden Police Department (CPD) Lt. Tim LeGault (pronounced "Leh-go") as its 2018 Officer of the Year, and the Camden Fire Department's (CFD) Roger Roscoe as its 2018 Firefighter of the Year.

EPD officer arrests attempted murder suspect

The man wanted in connection with the Feb. 27 shooting in the Camden Huddle House parking lot is behind bars, thanks to a traffic stop conducted by an Elgin Police Department (EPD) officer just after 1 a.m. Saturday.

Kershaw County man pleads guilty to federal gun charges

A Camden man pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm. According to a press release issued by South Carolina U.S. Attorney Beth Drake, Senior U.S. District Judge Joseph F. Anderson Jr. accepted the plea from Michael Andrew Gary, 27, of Camden, and will impose sentence after reviewing a presentencing report from the U.S. Probation Office.

Columbia man sentenced for counterfeiting

In a press release issued Thursday, South Carolina U.S. Attorney Beth Drake said David Michael Gibson, 39, of Columbia, was sentenced for conspiracy to manufacture and pass counterfeit currency. U.S. District Judge Mary Geiger Lewis sentenced Gibson to 30 months in jail. Previously, Judge Lewis sentenced Travis Cree Stafford, 39, and Justin William Watson, 32, both of Columbia, to 46 months and nine months in jail, respectively. They both were involved in the counterfeiting scheme with Gibson.

School board to discuss ‘occupational diplomas’

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees will receive information about and discuss "occupational diplomas" during its meeting tonight. According to a copy of tonight's proposed agenda, trustees will learn more about what are officially known as South Carolina High School Credentials (SCHSC) from Kershaw County School District (KCSD) Director of Special Services Tarrance McGovern.

Different threats, different outcomes

Between Feb. 15 and 22, four students made separate threats to Kershaw County schools. Two cases involved Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS). Another involved Leslie M. Stover Middle School (LSMS) outside Elgin. A fourth involved a threat made to Camden High School (CHS). Each case had a different outcome from the others, with only one -- the CHS case -- leading to an 11-year-old girl being petitioned to family court for a charge of disturbing schools.
