Pat Watts, long-time FAC, DAR supporter passes

A long-time supporter of both the Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County and the Hobkirk Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is being mourned today. Patricia "Pat" Plyler Watts died Tuesday at the age of 79.

CFD honors firefighters of the year at council meeting

The Camden Fire Department (CFD) recognized two of its top firefighters during Tuesday nights' Camden City Council meeting. CFD Chief John Bowers announced Lt. Chris Tidwell as the CFD's 2014 Career Firefighter of the Year and retired Capt. Gene Parnell as its Volunteer Firefighter of the Year.

SLED still investigating Folsom shooting

U.S. Marshals who fatally shot a federally convicted Camden accountant Dec. 5, 2014, notified the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) they were coming into Kershaw County the day before, but chose not to have the county's chief deputy accompany them.

Crescent Communities sell-off includes Kershaw County land

Crescent Communities LLC, a real estate offshoot of Duke Energy, recently closed on the sale of thousands of acres of land in South Carolina, most in Kershaw County. Portions of the property also lie in Chester, Fairfield and Lancaster counties.

The KershawHealth Board of Trustees will meet today at 6 p.m. at the Health Resource Center on Battleship Road in Camden. The relatively light agenda includes a quality committee report from Vice Chair Dr. Tallulah Holmstrom which will touch on a "pay for performance" update.

City council to hear Equine Foundation presentation

Representatives from the S.C. Equine Promotion Foundation (SCEPF) will speak before Camden City Council during its meeting Tuesday night. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.; there will be no afternoon work session. SCEPF officials are expected to update council on a $250,000 grant application to the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

KershawHealth sees 215 flu cases in one week

In one recent week, KershawHealth recorded 215 positive rapid flu tests. According to Paula Guild, KershawHealth's director of infection control and prevention, those 215 positive tests came back during the week ending Dec. 27. Guild said that is the highest number of positive flu tests this season.

Terry Gunn is no longer the "interim" chief executive officer (CEO) for KershawHealth. With a moderate raise and a substantial retention bonus attached, Gunn is now the permanent CEO of the county's public healthcare system.

McDowell Road bridge replacement starts Monday

Monday, a S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) contractor will begin replacing McDowell Road bridge, one of only 90 in the state being replaced as part of a special state-federal program funded under S.C. Act 98.
