Kershaw County West Playground unveiled

The newest -- and largest -- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant playground in the Midlands should be open to children this weekend. Saturday, up to 150 people gathered next to the not-quite-finished venue to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Kershaw County West Playground on what was only the second day of sunny skies in at least a week.

Midway High School alumni unveil new trophy case

On the first Saturday of each year, a large group of Midway High School (MHS) alumni meet at Midway Elementary School (MES) as members of Midway Reunion. Just a few days after its 2014 meeting a year ago, Midway Reunion Co-Chair Barbara Stevens and MES Principal Dell Brabham found more than 15 MHS athletic trophies, with at least one dating back to 1947. Kershaw County Council unanimously passed two resolutions recognizing Lugoff's Swift Water Rescue Team and first responders from across the county during its meeting Tuesday for their actions during October's historic flood event.

Amtrak train collides with logging truck in Cassatt

A northbound Amtrak passenger train struck a logging truck around 6 a.m. Monday just off U.S. 1 in Cassatt. According to Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews, the truck had just turned off of U.S. 1 on to Robert Reynolds Road. Railroad tracks hug U.S. 1 with the ungated and unlighted crossing just feet off the highway.

Pine Grove Road bridge to be closed until Spring 2016

A detour around a structurally damaged bridge on Pine Grove Road in Lugoff will remain in place until Spring 2016, according to a S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) engineer. SCDOT District One Engineering Administrator Bryan L. Jones said the hope is for the bridge to be replaced by the end of May 2016.

KH Foundation deciding its future

One organization is still deciding its future in the wake of Capella Healthcare and MUSC Health's takeover of KershawHealth. The KershawHealth Foundation is trying to decide not only its future, but exactly how it will disburse approximately $2 million in donations it still holds.
