Two birthdays symbolic of life's mysteries

My birthday and my wife's happen to be only four days apart. Today is mine while hers was Thursday when I took the day off to celebrate by doing what all married couples with children do: run all over creation on errands and medical appointments. Oh, we did stop in at this great bagel place (yum) where we caught up with my mother and one of my sisters, but this certainly wasn't a typical birthday the way I think of it.

Plane crashes in Elgin; pilot killed

A small, single engine plane headed to an air festival in Lakeland, Fla., from Amherst, N.Y., crashed into a wooded area along Larry Jeffers Road near Elgin just before 2 p.m. Friday, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Amherst is part of the greater Buffalo, N.Y., metropolitan area.

Restaurant manager charged with breach of trust

A 21-year-old restaurant manager has been accused of racking up $28,000 in bogus credit card fees and pocketing the money that would have been used to pay those fees.

Mather purchase approved on second reading

The city of Camden should become the new owners of 8.9 acres of the former Boylan-Haven-Mather Academy property no later than the end of May. Camden City Council -- with Mayor Jeffrey Graham recusing himself and Councilman Pat Partin absent -- voted 3-0 Tuesday morning on second and final reading of an ordinance authorizing the purchase.

KCSO stops serving municipal probate court orders

Starting today, Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies are no longer serving Kershaw County Probate Court orders of detention for mental health evaluations and commitments within the municipal limits of Camden, Elgin and Bethune. While deputies will continue to handle mental health probate court orders, the change leaves those municipalities' police departments to handle such matters within their jurisdictions.

KershawHealth announces new EMS plan

KershawHealth will change the way it offers emergency medical services (EMS) by the end of the month. Several EMS stations will move; others will expand. In addition, KershawHealth's ambulances will no longer answer calls for "non-emergent" patients, allowing that service to be picked up by the private sector.
