In July 2006, then-Century 21 Bob Capes Realtors Broker-in-Charge Greg Newman said growth was pushing into Kershaw County. There were new houses online then and his agents were seeing interest in Camden housing as a result of the pending arrival of the Third Army to Shaw Air Force Base. Newman said Kershaw County was in "great shape" because of its quality of life, access to I-20 and its schools.

'Y' on hold

The city of Camden will hold a referendum asking voters to choose if they wish to move forward with a proposed sports complex and if it should be run by a nonprofit organization such as the YMCA of Columbia. The measure will be placed before Camden voters during November's general election. The decision came in the latter portion of a lengthy Camden City Council meeting Tuesday morning that ended with a woman demanding to be heard who had to be asked to leave the chamber.

Illinois murder suspect arrested in Lugoff

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) assisted the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and DuPage County, Ill., sheriff's investigators in locating an alleged murderer. Sheriff Jim Matthews confirmed the arrest of Jose Alfredo Quezada-Ruvalcaba, 34, a/k/a Victor Lopez, of Archer Avenue, Elgin. The take-down took place at 7 a.m. Jan. 16 at a Lugoff restaurant.

Woman arrested in fatal shooting

An Elgin woman is now detained at the Kershaw County Detention Center on manslaughter charges in the case of a 29-year-old woman who died early Monday morning as a result of a gunshot wound to the chest. Sheriff Jim Matthews said deputies arrested Sally Memmert, 57, of Smith Road, Lugoff, in the shooting death of Petra Denise Boykin, 29, of Veterans Row, Elgin.

CCRG files to stop Htax for sports complex

Herbert Farber and the Camden Committee for Responsible Government Inc. (CCRG) filed an action at the Kershaw County Courthouse Wednesday seeking a permanent injunction against the city of Camden. The injunction would stop the city from using hospitality tax funds to construct a proposed sports complex that could be run by the YMCA of Columbia.

Elgin woman dies following shooting

A young Elgin woman died at Palmetto Health Richland early Tuesday morning following a 3 a.m. shooting on Smyrna Road at a home about two miles south of the intersection of Smyrna, Ridgeway and Springvale roads near the Fairfield County line.
