KCSD to focus on ‘health, safety and emergency’ repairs at schools

In November, voters rejected two referenda put on the ballot by the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) to replace or repair aging schools and other facilities. Now, the district must find ways to maintain those facilities without a $130 million bond or 1 percent sales tax it planned to use to pay for the bond.

City council to recognize Miss Camden, Miss Camden Teen

Camden City Council will recognize the new Miss Camden and Miss Camden Teen winners for 2015 during its meeting Tuesday evening. Council will honor 2015 Miss Camden Abigail Zvejnieks and 2015 Miss Camden Teen Olivia Loynes, as well as their platforms.

KCSD budget ‘notebook’ provides snapshot of school spending

On the 135th day of school, coming up on March 18, Midway Elementary School's projected enrollment should include 359 students in regular classrooms and another six in self-contained classroom. The school's classroom capacity is 400 students.

Pat Watts, long-time FAC, DAR supporter passes

A long-time supporter of both the Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County and the Hobkirk Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is being mourned today. Patricia "Pat" Plyler Watts died Tuesday at the age of 79.

CFD honors firefighters of the year at council meeting

The Camden Fire Department (CFD) recognized two of its top firefighters during Tuesday nights' Camden City Council meeting. CFD Chief John Bowers announced Lt. Chris Tidwell as the CFD's 2014 Career Firefighter of the Year and retired Capt. Gene Parnell as its Volunteer Firefighter of the Year.

SLED still investigating Folsom shooting

U.S. Marshals who fatally shot a federally convicted Camden accountant Dec. 5, 2014, notified the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) they were coming into Kershaw County the day before, but chose not to have the county's chief deputy accompany them.

Crescent Communities sell-off includes Kershaw County land

Crescent Communities LLC, a real estate offshoot of Duke Energy, recently closed on the sale of thousands of acres of land in South Carolina, most in Kershaw County. Portions of the property also lie in Chester, Fairfield and Lancaster counties.
