Penny sales tax, combined school location on tap

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees will continue its facilities discussion tonight in possible preparation of a ballot referendum for November's general election. Trustees will focus on whether or not to revisit a 15-year penny sales tax as a funding source for a list of facility-related projects. The board will also receive an update from staff about possible locations for a combined Bethune and Mt. Pisgah elementary school along S.C. 341. Tonight's meeting is being held at Mt. Pisgah Elementary School.

Committee ‘deeds’ new playground to county

The West Wateree Playground Steering Committee officially "deeded" the new Kershaw County West Complex playground to the county Tuesday night. The "transfer" took place during Kershaw County Council's meeting as part of a public presentation by co-chairs Laurey Carpenter and Elgin Mayor Melissa Emmons.

KCC to consider rezoning Cassatt property for Family Dollar

In November, Kershaw County Council approved a rezoning change of a parcel of land next to Black River Electric Cooperative's offices on U.S. 1 in Cassatt so a Dollar General could be built there. Tonight, council will consider first reading of another rezoning request for another piece of Cassatt property on U.S. 1, this time for the ultimate purpose of building a Family Dollar store.

Bethune, Mt. Pisgah to combine if referendum moves forward

On an 8-1 vote Tuesday night, with Trustee Kim Horton DuRant voting against, the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees voted to consolidate Bethune and Mt. Pisgah elementary schools at a yet to be determined location. The vote puts the schools' replacement on a project list for a potential referendum for this year's general election. The schools would only be consolidated if the board places the referendum on the November ballot and if residents vote to approve it.

New CCTC scholarship offers free tuition to high schoolers

In June 2014, Camden City Councilwoman Alfred Mae Drakeford attended a Small Cities conference in Texas hosted by the National League of Cities. There, she learned of a program where high school students earning a certain grade point average could attend their local technical college tuition free for the first two years.

Doby’s Mill wins first elementary school quiz bowl

A team of Doby's Mill Elementary School students won the gold in the Kershaw County School District's (KCSD) first-ever quiz bowl for 4th and 5th graders. The district, which already has middle and high school students competing in tournaments which culminate in state-level competitions, created the intra-district elementary school quiz bowl to emphasize the importance of academic success and to provide a competitive and collaborative opportunity for our students, according to KCSD Executive Director Instructional Support Programs Dr. Alisa Taylor.
