Trustees clash with 6-2-1 vote to keep BES, MPES open

It was a night of reversals and recriminations Tuesday during the Kershaw County Board of Trustees meeting at Camden Elementary School. Six of the board's nine trustees, led by Trustee Mara Jones, voted to remove the consolidation of Bethune and Mt. Pisgah elementary schools from a list of construction bond referendum projects. Jones' motion included providing $1 million each to the schools and Baron DeKalb Elementary School (BDK) for renovations.

School board to continue discussing referenda language

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees will continue its discussion on the actual language to be written into a proposed $138.8 million bond construction during its meeting tonight at Camden Elementary School (CES). Trustees will also discuss language to be used in a referendum to create a 1-cent sales tax to offset a 40-mil property tax increase to pay for the construction bond.

Man survives tractor trailer fall into Wateree River

A 60-year-old Batesburg man managed to survive after his tractor-trailer crashed through a concrete barrier on the westbound I-20 bridge over the Wateree River and fell dozens of feet to the water below.

County council debates local preference change

A proposed change to the local preference section of the county's procurement code led to a bit of debate among members of Kershaw County Council during its April 26 meeting. The procurement code serves as the county's guide for obtaining goods and services, either through direct purchase, competitive sealed bidding or requests for proposals or qualifications.

Man kidnaps family, forces ATM withdrawal

The Camden Police Department (CPD) is looking for the young man who abducted a 31-year-old woman and her 18- and 3-year-old sons from a Kendall Street, Camden home at gunpoint on April 27 and forced the woman to withdraw money from an ATM.

Camden man charged with having sex with 13-year-old girl

A 25-year-old man mentioned in Tuesday's weekly crime report as possibly contributing to the delinquency of a minor is now being charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor along with other charges. The Camden Police Department (CPD) and Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) have now charged Darius Tyler Davis of Campbell Street, Camden, with having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

Camden Kmart to close this summer

Sears Holding will close its Kmart store on West DeKalb Street in Camden in late July. Eligible employees will receive severance pay and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at other area Kmart and Sears stores, according to a press release issued Thursday.
