• Kershaw County residents have a special reason to pull for Wofford's basketball team, as the Terriers are coached by Mike Young, who's married to the former Margaret Green, daughter of Davis and Gege Green of Camden. Beverly-Hayes Book Scholarship opens doors for seniors

Dr. Camisha Hayes Williams announced the establishment of a $500 book scholarship in memory of her mother, Beverly Hayes Brown, on Feb. 26. Brown was a strong supporter of her community and believed all children should have access to quality education. It is fitting that this scholarship has been endowed in her memory to advance the future of a high school student seeking higher education. Downtown Divas Go Red

On Feb. 17 the Downtown Camden Guild hosted the second annual Downtown Divas Go Red for Women's Heart Health Month event. Nearly 100 women participated in the tour of downtown businesses, which included free health screenings provided by KershawHealth hospital. The event was spearheaded by Jennifer Shaw and Gail Carter of First Community Bank.

House passes short-sighted budget

Last week, the House of Representatives approved a proposed state government budget for Fiscal Year 2011-2012 by adopting and sending to the Senate H.3700, this year's general appropriations bill, and H.3701, the joint resolution making appropriations from the capital reserve fund. The proposed $5.4 billion budget includes widespread cuts for state government agencies made necessary by the declines in state revenue in recent years and by the absence of federal stimulus funds that have been used to help offset shortfalls.
