• A recent news story indicated that this year's mild winter had confused plants and animals alike. House busy with budget, bills

This past week the House of Representatives returned to Columbia following a week of furlough. Each week the House takes on furlough saves the state $50,000. The House will take two more weeks of furlough in April. The House has repeatedly passed bills to shorten the legislative session only for them to die in the Senate. The House has taken upon itself to effectively shorten its session through furloughs because House members believe that we can accomplish our objectives in fewer weeks and save taxpayer money.

A way with words

The Camden Poets Society (CPS), an affiliate of the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC), celebrated its 20th anniversary at the Douglas-Reed House on the campus of the FAC Feb. 7. Anyone who had ever participated in the Camden Poets Society was invited to attend. Notebooks covering the 20 years were on display along with published books of poetry. There was also a special display honoring members who have passed away along with samples of their work.

Substantial differences

The newly proposed city council ordinance -- "Should the City of Camden continue with plans to construct a recreation facility and partner with a third party administer the facility?" -- is an unacceptable subversion of the ordinance submitted to City Council on Jan. 24, 2012, that was signed by 1,107 registered voters in the City of Camden.

William Gamewell (Bill) Major, Jr., 92, of Camden, SC, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2014. He was the son of the late William Gamewell Major, Sr. and Alma (Baby) Muldrow-Major of Camden. Local veterans respect the flag through disposal

Members of American Legion Post 195, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8346 and AMVETS Post 33 recently joined together for an annual tradition: the disposal -- through burning -- of unserviceable American flags.
