Editorial: FOIA steps

Legislators in Columbia have taken a couple of nice steps towards making government in South Carolina more open and accessible. Transparency is the word used most often these days, and while it's a bit overused, it's pretty accurate. The House of Representatives passed on second reading a bill requiring agendas at public meetings, setting up a Freedom of Information (FOI) Appeals Office and cutting the time for a response from 15 days to 10. None of them are earth-shattering, but they're solid.

Richardson: Puppy love

We are working on a Boykin Spaniel exhibit at the Camden Archives and Museum. Our curator of collections, Rickie Good, is an avowed dog lover whose household is home to four big dogs. She is absolutely in heaven working on this exhibit. With thousands of photographs of Boykin Spaniels on disk at her desk, she declares each one she opens is the cutest. Choosing the puppies to be featured in the exhibit has been a joyful and overwhelming task for her. Joe Benton

Benny Joe Benton, 73, of Lugoff, SC, died Monday, February 16, 2015. He was born in Winnsboro, SC, the son of the late J. C. Benton and Mary Drawdy Benton. Joe was in the US Army and played in the 291 First Army Band. He completed basic training at Fort Benning, GA, 12th Military, was assigned to Germany and transferred to 9th Artillery, but was later transferred to the 3rd division band while in Germany. Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Emerson, a 2-year-old male rabbit, and Chani, a 2-year-old female domestic short-haired tabby cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering.
