The unknown celebrity

WASHINGTON -- The squabbling between political campaigns and the harrumphing of pundits were put in proper perspective at, of all places, the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) dinner -- the annual Prom on the Potomac where 2,000 or so media members and movie stars gather to honor the president and admire one another.

Council v. Matthews

We don't know whether Kershaw County voters will face a referendum this fall on whether to organize a new county police department -- in the process taking virtually all authority away from the sheriff's office -- but the fact that county council is even considering it is a bit unsettling for both entities. Discord between sheriffs and county council members is nothing new, of course. In the past, going back decades, some sheriffs have been quick to remind council members that they are independent elected officials, and councils have been no less reticent to let sheriffs know they are dependent ...

Candidate clarification

After reviewing the manner in which I was quoted in the Rock Hill Road Trip article in the May 5th issue of the C-I, I need to clarify my comments. First, let me say that I oppose the notion of the City taking a go-it-alone position on the operation of a sports complex. I support City-County dialogue and recreational cooperation.

Behind 'Fakegate'

What could be more American than encouraging a robust debate on one of the most controversial issues of the day? The answer -- for some on the left, anyway -- is: lie about your opponents and make a pathetic effort to discredit them.
