Chili champions

The United Way of Kershaw County held its first Chili Cook-off on the Town Green in downtown Camden Saturday. The day was filled with children playing ball, face painting, a wide variety of folks dancing to the music of Second Nature and, of course, lots of chili. There were 17 competing chili teams. SAFE Federal Credit Union sponsored the afternoon event. The chili prepared by The Old Armory won first place in the judges' selection. Cole chosen to perform at Walt Disney World Thanksgiving Day Parade

Brittany Cole, daughter of Todd Cole of Bishopville and Loretta and Fred Wrigley of Chapin, has been chosen to join a select group of elementary, junior high, and high school cheerleaders and dancers from across the U.S. that will perform in the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) and Universal Dance Association (UDA) Thanksgiving Tour Parade at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla.

National broadcast journalist will honor father at Cup's military salute

Emmy award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author Rita Cosby will be a special guest at this year's 42nd annual Marion duPont Scott Colonial Cup steeplechase race in Camden. As part of the Nov. 19 event -- billed as "military appreciation day" -- Cosby will be presented the first-ever Major General Baron de Kalb Award which she will accept for -- and on behalf of -- her father, Richard Cosby, 85.

Remember Veterans Day

Today, Nov. 11, 2011, marks 93 years since the Armistice was signed that ended the hostilities of World War I, "the war to end all wars." Hostilities were ceased on the 11th hour of the 11th month 93 years ago. To commemorate the Armistice and the return to peace, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11, 1919, as Armistice Day.

Kids and guns

Whenever the subject of guns is brought up, it engenders strong opinion on both sides -- from those who believe in absolute Second Amendment rights, and from those who believe that nobody should be allowed to own a gun in any circumstances. Like most people, we fall somewhere in the middle, solidly on the side of Americans to own firearms but a bit dubious about why it makes sense for people to own Uzis and other automatic weapons that are made with the express purpose of killing people.

Raymond William “Bo” Peake, Jr.

Mr. Raymond William "Bo" Peake, Jr., 60, of Elgin, died Wednesday, August 27, 20144. Born in Camp Lejeune, NC on May 9, 1954, he was the son of Barbara Shelley Peake and the late Raymond William Peake, Sr. A master automotive technician, he was co-owner of Peake Motors with his late father.
