Remember the Revolution, then act!

It is said that a memorial, whether monument or statue is a promise from the present to the future -- our posterity -- about the past. The true value of that memorial is determined by how well we keep the promise. What John Hagins recently did here with our hometown Maria Kirby-Smith in honoring Joseph Kershaw and Catawba Chief Hagler is simply outstanding! Powerful personalities from our town and county's birth on whom the public can more easily ponder. John stepped up on the mound when no one else did and Maria hit a homerun with these two characters cut realistically ...

Deficit must be reduced

No matter which candidate wins the presidency and no matter which party controls the House and the Senate, elected officials would do well to pay attention to level-head business leaders when it comes to the horrid budget deficits this country is facing. Democrats decry any kind of spending cuts, while Republicans want to close the door on tax increases, period.

Practical Christmas gift ideas

Dear Annie: Christmas is just around the corner. Teachers appreciate the gifts from their students, but I know many teachers who spend their own money on classroom needs. Please suggest that students consider giving teachers a gift card to places that offer school supplies and also for coffee shops, microwave soups and other consumables.

Noted and passed - Oct. 29, 2012

• In the midst of all the presidential punditry and endless spin, we were struck recently by the simple concept of how much sense it would make to have a single six-year term for the presidency, with re-election not allowed. Museum article should help

Early this AM (Friday), I picked up a copy of your paper and I was absolutely delighted that you wrote such a fine article detailing my proposal to bringing my collections back to Camden in the form of a local museum. It was an outstanding article. If we are successful in opening this downtown museum, it will be largely due to the article you wrote! I appreciated this more than you will ever know.
