CHS father/son baseball camp includes USC tickets

The Camden High School baseball coaching staff will host its annual Father-Son Baseball Camp on Saturday, March 8 at American Legion Park in Camden.

Four scouts conferred Eagle rank

The Boy Scout District Advancement Board conferred the rank of Eagle to four deserving boys during the evening of January 2 at Camden Military Academy. The board was manned by Art Graham, Walter Smith and Greg Simonson. The Eagle candidates from Troop 316 were Scotty Grigsby, Matthew Presson and Nicholas Spitzer; and Cameron Small from Troop 901. Each youth did a great job at his Eagle board. Kevin Rhodes is scoutmaster for Troop 316 and David Riddle is scoutmaster for Troop 901.

Friends of Library Annual Book Sale begins soon

The Friends of the Kershaw County Library Annual Book Sale will be held at the Burndale Shopping Center in the old Family Dollar building on Jefferson Davis Highway across from Piggly Wiggly in Camden. The sale will begin on March 6, with "Friends' Night" exclusively for members of Friends of the Library from 6 to 8 p.m. Community members who would like to purchase membership can do so at the door.

David Wheeler

David Wheeler 77, of Tacoma, WA formally of Camden, S. Carolina passed away February 18, 2014 at Franciscan Hospice and Palliative Care in University Place, WA. He retired in May of 2005 with 45 years of service with the Department of Veteran Affairs. He leaves to cherish his precious memories, four sisters, Ethel Staten, Catherine Hollis, Shirley Reddick of Camden, SC, Margie Bennett (Alfred) of Lugoff, SC; one brother, Johnny Wheeler (Catherine Montgomery) of Irvington, NJ; a host of special friends, Evelyn Ward, Linda P. Medina, Angela P. Lee, Charles E. Gilchrist of Lakewood, WA.

• We commented just last week on the wise decision by Volkswagen workers in Tennessee to turn down unionization with the UAW. But Gov. Nikki Haley's statement that unionized plants aren't welcome at all in South Carolina is off the mark. Sen. Vincent Sheheen of Camden, who's running against Haley, said South Carolina should remain a right-to-work state, where workers have the right to decide whether to join unions. That's a more reasonable position.

Should S.C. pay for surveillance?

Gov. Nikki Haley's executive budget grabbed a few headlines for its items on education, transportation and Medicaid waiver programs. One component of the budget was almost completely ignored, however, and it shouldn't be. The governor's proposed spending plan includes $8.5 million in total funds -- $5.3 million from the federal government -- for a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Fusion Center.
