Supports sports complex, YMCA

I support building the proposed Camden Sports Complex and contracting with the YMCA to operate and manage it for many reasons, some of which benefit me and some because others in Camden would benefit from having a YMCA in the city. My wife and I are Senior Citizens who still happen to be working (as many more of us have to do). Working beyond age 65 means we must be fit and healthy to remain viable employees. Some of the facilities proposed for the new YMCA, including an air-conditioned walking track, aerobic and fitness machines and, we hope soon, an ...

Family describes missing woman, relationship with Grant

Two women close to Adriana Laster hope she is found soon … and have a warning about the man who may be responsible for her disappearance. Her aunt and legal guardian, Dorothy Forston, of Alabama, and Phyllis Horn, the grandmother of Laster's daughter, described the missing woman as a "sweet, little kid" who grew up to be an attentive, if not always present mother. Laster disappeared last September while living with Freddie Grant, 52, who is being held in connection with the disappearance of Columbia teenager Gabrielle "Gabbie" Swainson.

Democrats in South Carolina have every right to criticize Gov. Nikki Haley. Even from many in her own party, she gets low marks for her governing style, which has tended to alienate many. Of course, some of that alienation has come among members of the Republican-controlled General Assembly who are loathe to cede any additional power to a governor -- any governor -- because it might lessen their authority.

CRRC: city ignoring your request on sports complex

Election Tuesday is only eight weeks away, and as we approach these days leading up to the opportunity to exercise the precious right to vote, I want to update you on the Camden Recreation Referendum Coalition (CRRC) issue and the city of Camden. Many of you have been asking about the status of the ballot-question and if the petition, signed by over 1,700 of you, has been recognized as valid by Mayor Jeffrey Graham and city council. The answer is no -- as a matter of fact, the city of Camden through attorney Charles Cushman and Columbia attorney Danny Crowe ...

Sister needs to take own financial responsibility from parents

Dear Annie: My older sister, "Susie," is 33 and has been receiving financial support from my parents for more than a decade. They give her money outright and also pay her car insurance, health insurance and other bills. Susie does not work. She's in a master's program, but it is unclear whether she will finish. My mother believes she needs to help Susie, as she has had mental illness issues throughout her adulthood.

Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site to commemorate explorer de Soto’s trip to Camden

Until he died of fever aside the Mississippi River in 1542, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto had been on a quest to find riches, especially gold, to fill his coffers. Confident the precious metal existed in what today is Southeast America, de Soto amassed more than 600 men, 200 horses, massive Irish wolfhounds and numerous pigs to accompany him on what would be a four year exploration or entrada.
