Author’s Tea

Midway Elementary School student Madison Hensley, 7, was chosen to tell her story about the rewards of being kind during the school's first Author's Tea of the school year Tuesday. Madison helped a student who dropped her books and the student rewarded Madison by talking about her kindness on Midway's morning news show. "It was scary, but it ended up being OK," said the second-grader of her news show debut. Each month, students from kindergarten through fifth grade read their best written work for family and friends, followed by a catered lunch. "Parent's come and enjoy ...

Time limits

Kershaw County Council made a reasonable decision earlier this week in limiting to 10 minutes the amount of time people have to speak when addressing issues during public hearings. Having the right to be heard is fundamental, and it's important that council didn't attempt to do away with that, but anyone who's ever attended hearings before -- or any type of public forum, for that matter -- knows that some people can get carried away with the sound of their own voices.

Shameful behavior

I am truly flabbergasted and ashamed. Some of the same people, including educators, who chastised county council for the way they treated students, for not putting students first, and telling them they (council) should be ashamed of themselves, were some of the same people who made a mass exodus during Councilman Bobby Gary's announcement of a "Proclamation for Amari Williams' Got Heart Day" after the millage increase for the school district failed.

‘My name is Kershaw County’

My name is Kershaw County. I am located in the state of South Carolina and I possess approximately 740 square miles, and I claim to have approximately 60,000 citizens that live in me. I have a lot to boast about, so much that I cannot begin to tell of them. I am proud of my citizens and I depend on them to make me what I am. I am only as good as my people. That I know!

The swing set

I tore down the old swing set last weekend, demolished it actually. I unscrewed as many nuts and bolts as I could and then took the saw to it, leaving only the pile of sand which had broken the fall of many a crying or giggling toddler at the base of the sliding board. It was time. The old structure had become a little "shop of horrors," so to speak. There were several rungs missing from the ladder, there were damaged boards everywhere, the swings had become rusty and unreliable. She was tired.
