A funeral service celebrating the life of Emily Stevenson Vereen, 88, of Camden, will be held at 11:00 a.m, Monday, February 25, 2013 at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden. Rev. John Hallman will officiate. Family will receive friends following the service in Westminster Hall. Burial will follow in Quaker Cemetery. Grace Episcopal Church receives new acolyte statue

Sculptor Bob Baronowski's statue of an acolyte was recently added to the Memorial Garden of Grace Episcopal Church at 1315 Lyttleton St. in Camden. The bronze figure is 4 feet, 6 inches tall and faces the church as if leading a procession toward the building. Mr. Baronowski is a member of the National Scupture Society and the American Medallic Sculpture Association. Baronowski's works consist of portraiture, figurative and relief sculpture in terra cotta and hot and cold cast bronze. The garden is open to the community.

Little Miss/Teen Miss Camden-Kershaw County pageant

The Little Miss/Teen Miss Camden-Kershaw County pageant was held Feb. 9, in Camden. Twenty contestants competed for the Camden and Kershaw County titles. The winners will compete in the Little Miss South Carolina pageant in June in Hartsville.

Gun bill

A bill that would allow guns in restaurants and bars is making its way through the S.C. Senate, but the proposal is vague, aimless and filled with potential for trouble. As one senator remarked, "Alcohol and guns don't mix," and the same lawmaker said he hadn't talked to a single law enforcement person who was in favor of it. We doubt he'll find many.

KCSO seeks person of interest in Kmart robbery

Wednesday, the Chronicle-Independent's weekly crime report featured an armed robbery at a "West DeKalb Street" department store where the suspect got away with $1,700. Now, the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) and Crimestoppers are hoping to find and speak with a man who may know something about the robbery at what is now being officially identified as the Camden Kmart.
