Requiem for a master contrarian

Only once since my foolish adolescence do I recall actually feeling fortunate to be a smoker, a truly insidious addiction that I have since kicked. It was the slightly chilly Washington evening on which I was joined during a smoke break at a friend's birthday party by Christopher Hitchens, one of the few people who can be called a journalist-intellectual without it sounding like a punch line.

Late veteran honored for service

During a recent flag ceremony on the Town Green in Camden, the Kershaw County Leathernecks honored the life of Given Webster with a tribute to his service to the community. Webster died unexpectedly Nov. 1 and was the acting commander of James Leroy Belk American Legion Post 17. Standing together during the ceremony (from left) are Webster's wife, Jane Webster; Cadet Zachary Shaffer from Camden Military Academy; Bill Garcher, judge advocate, Kershaw County Leathernecks; Ron Stroud, Kershaw County Leaternecks; and Sgt Maj. Local Girl Scouts collect gifts for Toys for Tots

Three local Girl Scout troops opted to bring gifts to donate to Toys for Tots instead of exchanging gifts with each other during their annual Christmas party. The troops included Daisy Troop 3415, led by Lindsey Cox and April Trapp; Brownie Troop 3444 led by Frances Griggs and Lori Lance; and Junior Troop 937 led by Kim Taylor and Vickie Thomas. The troops recently gathered at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church in Camden to donate the gifts to Toys for Tots.

United Way of Kershaw County thanks contributors at campaign Luncheon

The United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) hosted a luncheon to recognize volunteers and contributors from this year's campaign. The money raised will benefit the numerous UWKC partner agencies that serve Kershaw County. During the luncheon, representatives from each campaign division were recognized and thanked for their work during this campaign season. The Boys and Girls Club Step Team, the Kershaw County Diamonds, performed during the event.
