Portion of McRae Road closed for bridge repairs

Camden, L-E students raise more than $20,000 for United Way

Last week students from Camden High and Lugoff-Elgin High used their spirit weeks to raise money for their local community. Students sponsored car washes, carnivals, bake sales, class challenges, t-shirt sales, penny wars and other creative activities to raise $20,832 for the United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC), beating last year's efforts by more than $7,000. At Friday night's LEHS vs. CHS football game, student government leaders from each school gathered in opposite end zones to display their total amount collected; LEHS edged CHS by just more than $400 to earn this year's bragging rights.

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are an 8-week-old female calico kitten and a 2-year-old male shepherd/beagle mix. In a community such as ours, odds are that the Chronicle-Independent's readers are associated with one or more small nonprofit organizations. We would like to get the word out that some small nonprofit organizations are at risk of losing their tax-exempt status because they have not filed required returns with the Internal Revenue Service for 2007, 2008 and 2009. It is important that they act now to preserve their status by filing returns by Oct. 15, 2010.
