Member of the Year

Great things are accomplished one task at a time by one American Legion Auxiliary member at a time: one offer of help to the wife of a deployed serviceman; one volunteer assisting with a community blood drive; one friendly invitation to another woman to join the Auxiliary. The efforts of our members add up to millions of hours and millions of dollars annually in service of the Auxiliary's mission. Those members whose extraordinary dedication energizes their units -- and thereby the organization as a whole -- are honored with the Unit Member of the Year Award.

Weeding out phony warriors

Bragging about military honors you didn't receive is despicable yet still constitutional, says the Supreme Court. I agree. But help is on the way for those who want to weed out the fakers, if Congress can put aside its own battles long enough.

L-EHS student concerned about animal shelter

I am writing this letter about the concerns of the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter. Our animal shelter has its pros and cons. The benefits of an animal shelter is it provides protection for those individuals that cannot afford the proper care for their animal. Think about it: what would our city look like if we did not have an animal shelter? There would be dogs and cats running around freely. Every day I ride down Hwy. 1, I see a helpless dog on the side of the rode with its ribs sticking out from lack of nutrients.

Power, divided

We've always believed the United States government works best when power is divided -- that is, with a president from one party and a Congress controlled by the opposite party. As of now, of course, we have a Democratic president and a split Congress, with the House of Representatives controlled by Republicans and the Senate dominated by Democrats. There are multiple forecasting models out there for the upcoming election, with most of them giving the GOP a better-than-even chance of gaining a majority in the Senate while retaining control of the House.
