Incivility in politics

Voters here in Kershaw County and across South Carolina were subjected to an endless diatribe of political poison in the days and weeks leading up to Saturday's Republican presidential primary. This endless vitriol is nothing new, of course, as the entire process seems to have degenerated into an endless bout of mud wrestling. If you need evidence that not many people in Washington are concerned about the direction of politics and civility, we'll pass along an item that we discovered not long ago.

There’s more work to be done

Recently I was blessed to visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the beautiful ground of our National Mall. McKissack and McKissack's Lisa Anders, the senior project manager for the Memorial construction, gave a background on elements of the memorial. Ms. Anders had overall responsibility for management of the contraction. She said the $121 million memorial used varied treatment and textures of water and stone in creating a sense of the diversity of the civil rights movements. It was a singular distinction for an African-American woman.

State should streamline government

Change comes very slowly in South Carolina. But this year we have an exciting chance to make a difference for the future. After more than six years of effort, the South Carolina Legislature is on the brink of true reform in the way our government operates. We can change the structure of our state government and move it away from the unaccountable, auto-pilot it operates in currently to a more responsible and efficient model.

** Thomas Ravenel, the former state treasurer who served prison time for cocaine distribution, now stars in a reality television show called "Southern Charm."
