• Another U.S. senator who's been amenable to reaching across the aisle is leaving Washington, further curtailing the number of moderate lawmakers in that body. Max Baucus, a Democrat from Montana, will not seek another term after serving for many years in Washington. Moderates are becoming more and more of an endangered species, which is bad for the entire country.

KCSO, EPD arrest two for auto break-ins

Following a joint investigation between the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) and the Elgin Police Department (EPD), officers arrested David Allen Richardson, 26, and Haley O'Ryan Pearson, 19. Investigators from both agencies identified the pair as having broken in to nearly a dozen vehicles in the town of Elgin and Kershaw County.

Helen "Sis" Warden Black

Sis Black passed away peacefully with family members at her side on April 4, 2013 in Annapolis, Md. She was born in St. Johnsbury, VT., on December 18, 1923, the daughter of the late David Royal and Hazel Ramage Warden. She was raised in Bluefield, W. VA. and graduated from Beaver High School, where she was an excellent academic student, class leader, and athlete. Willis U. Arthur, Jr.

Willis U. Arthur, Jr., formerly of Camden, SC passed away April 27, 2013. He was born November 13, 1925, in Aiken, SC to Willis Uriah Arthur, Sr. and Iva Lee Redd Taylor Arthur as the youngest of eleven siblings. After serving in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, Willis graduated from the University of SC with a mechanical engineering degree. He spent his entire career with DuPont starting at the Savannah River Plant in Aiken and then the May Plant in Camden.

L-EMS Poetry Jam

Recently, the staff and students of Lugoff-Elgin Middle School held the 1st annual Open Mic Poetry Jam during all lunches. Mrs. Anne Lemieux and Mrs. Elaine Dorsey coordinated this effort to celebrate Poetry Month and Poem in your Pocket Day. Students and staff recited original poetry as well as published works by authors such as Shel Sliverstein, Walt Whitman, Edgar Allen Poe and more. The school thanked its 76 volunteers who recited poetry.
