Boykin Spring Fling trail ride

Boykin's Spring Fling will celebrate history and horses. The South Carolina Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site will host the Boykin Spring Fling Trail Ride on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m., with the last riders leaving at 1 p.m. This trail ride is not timed and provides a unique opportunity for riders of all ages to explore scenic private farms and woods in the historic Boykin community.

Editorial: Clemson’s will

Major college athletics -- football and basketball, specifically -- have been on the radar recently as various proposals for paying athletes have been made. Additionally, the entire atmosphere surrounding big-time sports has been discussed, and individual universities are all examining their own programs. The entire subject is too complex to address in one editorial, but Clemson recently advanced a plan with one proposal we particularly like.

Elizabeth Ann Fischer, a sophomore at the University of South Carolina, daughter of Betty and Richard Fischer of Camden has been awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the Morris Newspaper Corporation for the 1990-91 scholastic year. A 1988 graduate of Camden High School, Miss Fischer is active in the S.C. Scholastic Press Association and the Southern Interscholarship Association.

Michael Collins

Michael Collins, 54, of Lugoff, SC, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2015 after suffering from a stroke. He was born November 18, 1960 in Elyria, OH where he resided until the age of 23. Mike graduated from Elyria High School in 1979 and then from the Virginia Beach Police Academy in 1986. He served 12 years as a Police Officer in Virginia Beach before retiring in 1998. Mike loved all sports. In high school he lettered in baseball (pitcher), basketball and football (quarterback).
