Letter: Treat them like one of ‘us’

It has been said practically every major issue that passes through our GOP-elected officials' state house -- from education to healthcare to the selection of judges -- has racial undertones. And our GOP-elected officials may have passed the crossroad beyond which to get these evil spirits that loom over our state house in order.

Hilton F. Batts

Hilton F. Batts was born in Wilson, NC on February 10th , 1931 and born again in August, 1957. Hilton was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 22, 2014. Hilton passed away peacefully with his devoted wife Peggy, children, Carlton and Sheri and granddaughter, Ashlyn, by his side.

Pillows tied up with love

Nannie Seegars made 220 fleece pillows for residents at the Springdale Nursing Home. Her family, including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, distributed the pillows to residents and employees on November 15. Seegars wanted to make the pillows to show her appreciation for the nursing home. "Mama has been working on these pillows, tied up with love, for about 10 months and it has been a true labor of love. We pray that God blesses each angel who receives a pillow," Seegar's daughter, Pat Collins said.

American Legion Post 17 oratorical contest orientation

An orientation meeting for potential participants in the James Leroy Belk American Legion Post 17 Annual High School Oratorical Contest will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30 at Post 17's home on West DeKalb St. in Camden. Contest officials will discuss the subject that will be used for oration as well as explain contest rules.

Amateur Radio Club welcomes Gene Faulkenberry

Gene Faulkenberry, director of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), visited the Kershaw County Amateur Radio Club's November meeting. Director Faulkenberry gave a brief history on the large scale emergencies that he has seen during his time with Kershaw County. He highlighted Hurricane Hugo in 1989, the train derailment in 1990 and the flooding that occurred when many ponds were breached after heavy rains in 1991.
