This week, I had occasion to be in all four parts of South Carolina, talking with a wide variety of business people about innovation, our state and its future. What they said was both extremely encouraging and extremely discouraging.

Dabney family members await new book The Dabneys of South Carolina

A group of Dabney family members from across the state met in late October to preview plans for a new book, The Dabneys of South Carolina, to be published in early 2014. The event was hosted by Doris Faye Vinson at her home in Camden. The authors of the new book are John Edward Dabney, a native of Rock Hill, who presently resides in New Jersey, and his cousin, Joseph Earl Dabney, a native of Kershaw, who lives in Atlanta. Joseph Dabney is also an award-winning author and writer of several books.

FAC and city of Camden announce plans for second annual ‘Horsing around on the Town Green’ event

The Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County and the City of Camden are pleased to present an evening of entertainment to kick off the Colonial Cup weekend on Friday. Now in its second year, this free and exciting event will begin at 6 p.m. with food and drink vendors along with music on the Town Green. The Root Doctors, a popular cover and dance band, will take the stage at 7 p.m.

Author Sherman Carmichael will visit Books on Broad November 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. Books on Broad is located at 944 Broad St., in Camden. Carmichael's book, Eerie South Carolina, will be available for purchase and autographing. This event is free and open to the public.

Robert S. Hathway

Robert S. "Bob" Hathaway, 87, formerly of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2013 in Columbia, S.C. Born on June 4, 1926, he was the son of the late Raymond E. and Edna F. Hathaway. Bob was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Violet Rose Harble Hathaway; sons, Robert Michael Hathaway and Mark Hathaway; brothers, John E. Hathaway and James C. Hathaway; and sister, Ruth Edna Hathaway.

Rectory Square tennis court work underway

The tennis courts located at Rectory Square will be closed through Nov. 29 for a resurfacing project. During this time, a contractor will patch any cracks on the courts and apply a new acrylic surface. The color of the courts will also be changed to U.S. Open Blue.

Camden's Johnny Deal received Winthrop University's Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. According to a Winthrop press release, Deal -- Winthrop Class of 1984 and a retired banker from First Palmetto Savings Bank -- "has been a gracious contributor as a goodwill ambassador."

Haley visits Hengst at German motor show

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley visited the Hengst booth at the International Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany in September. Hengst of North America is headquartered in Camden, where it established its U.S. production facility in 2005.
