Football refs

People here in Kershaw County and South Carolina take their football seriously. Though the Carolina Panthers are based in nearby Charlotte, the college game still reigns supreme here, but Sunday afternoons still attract plenty of fans who like to watch the National Football League games. Some of those contests have been thrown into disarray by substitute officials who have taken the place of the league's regular officials, who were locked out by team owners in a labor dispute.

Dail Dinwiddie: Once upon a disappearance

WASHINGTON -- I've written variations of this column a couple of times during the past 20 years, but certain occasions bear revisiting -- and surely the disappearance of a friend is one.

Arbor Day: a 25-year local celebration

With the official start of autumn last week and the holidays soon upon us, my thoughts turn to a truly unique American holiday. No, not Thanksgiving but Arbor Day. Perhaps you may recall celebrating Arbor Day in elementary school, perhaps you remember hearing John Denver singing "Trees for Your Tomorrow" on television or radio on behalf of the National Arbor Day Foundation or perhaps you've seen an article about it in The Chronicle Independent with a photo of people standing around a newly planted tree.

Editorial: KershawHealth

During the last week, we have published two reports on KershawHealth. The first, growing out of the hospital's most recent board of trustees meeting, focused on its market share. It is relatively healthy, thanks to KershawHealth's being the only hospital in all of Kershaw County. More people living in the county turn to KershawHealth for emergency care than anywhere else. However, the report -- broadly speaking -- noted a decrease in market share in outpatient services and only slight increases for inpatient services.

Parker: The mourning after

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- By all appearances Friday morning, as thousands lined the street waiting (and wilting) for hours in 90-degree heat to enter the funeral arena where President Obama was to deliver a eulogy for state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, racial unity seemed a comfortable fact of life.

Reader, wife support removing Confederate battle flag

Several years ago, my wife and I, along with our youngest son, his wife and their children, attended a Fourth of July celebration in Bath, Maine. Bath is a picturesque little city which only Maine seems capable of providing. It is also a seafaring town, home to the Bath Iron Works, where ships have slid down the ways for close to 200 years.

Reader: take advantage of 'living history'

I was browsing the internet looking at different sites listing historical events of the past 100 years and was surprised to see how much of history had been left off. So many events which have taken place during the past century which have been instrumental in the growth of this country have been left out of our history books and articles of today.
