Camden Archives and Museum earns award for Doby exhibit

The Camden Archives and Museum received an Award of Achievement at the S.C. Federal of Museums' (SCFM) annual meeting, held in March in Greenwood. The award recognized the "excellent utilization of resources and professionalism" for the archives' "Camden's Baseball Hall of Famer: Larry Doby" exhibit and associated programming. The exhibit ran from July 2 to Dec. 31, 2012, in the Whitely Room and drew much praise from those who viewed it.

An All Star Send Off

Doby's Mill Elementary School students gave its Special Olympians a world class send-off as they headed off to competition. More than half of the school lined the front sidewalk, cheering and holding signs of encouragement and support as these special athletes left the school grounds to attend the Special Olympics at Camden Military Academy on April 12.

NY governor recognizes city electric crews

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, parts of the east coast were devastated. Many people were left without power. States required assistance in order to restore electrical services to affected areas. The City of Camden was one municipality that sent crews to Pennsylvania and New York to provide much needed aid. The City Electric Department sent Jerry Marthers, Duane Dykes, William Peake, Matthew Grigsby, Jeremy Bowers, William Van Hoose and Jason Burr to help restore power.

Spring Fling returns

This year's Spring Fling will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Red Bank Farm in the Boykin community. The ride is a celebration of history and horses and is a tax-deductible benefit for the S.C. Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site. The ride and lunch is $35; juniors, $25. For more information, call 713-3996 or 432-3414. Rain date is Saturday, May 4.

A time of gathering for Mr. Robert Franklin Meshach, 77, will be held on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Newbaker Funeral Home in Blairstown, N.J. The family will receive friends Friday 3:00-5:00 p.m. prior to the service at Newbaker Funeral Home. Centennial service

KershawHealth kicked off its Centennial Celebration Sunday at Temple Beth El. The Service of Thanksgiving included a tribute to Bernard Mannes Baruch and was meant as a way to "give thanks for a mission of caring that has remained steadfast for a century." Marlene Mischner welcomed the crowd and Rabbi Jonathan Case of Beth Shalom Synagogue in Columbia gave tribute to Baruch. The Rev. Philip Blankenship of Blaney Baptist Church in Elgin, Rev. Graveside services to celebrate the life of Mary Susan White will be held Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at Kershaw City Cemetery, Kershaw, SC.
