Lugoff firefighters welcome kids ‘Back To School’

As most Kershaw County schools opened their doors to students Monday, the Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) was there for the fourth year in a row with a fire truck at Wateree Elementary School (WES) early in the morning as students returned to class. LFD headquarters sent out its 77-foot ladder truck to WES as parents and buses brought students back to school on the nervous "first day."

Tap, Jazz, Ballet, and Baton classes will be offered starting September 4 at the Kershaw County Recreation Department for ages 2 and up. Kim Forrest is the instructor bringing over 34 years of experience in the dancing field. Classes will be on Wednesdays starting at 4 p.m. with the fee being $42 a month. Classes are taught in combination.

These sweet pets need a home

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Jasper, a 3-month-old retriever mix male and Siamese female cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. One-and-done

Chris Paul, the former Wake Forest basketball star who is now regarded by many as the best point guard in the NBA, has taken over the presidency of the troubled NBA Players' Association. Many people have more than a little trouble understanding why athletes who are paid millions of dollars a year for playing a game even need a union. We won't open a debate on that, but one issue on which Paul could have a positive influence is the ridiculous "one and done" rule which affects college basketball.
