City boards and commissions

Camden City Council is wise to consider the role and development of city boards and commissions, and an overall restructuring of the process would be a good idea. Carlos family to hold reunion Friday through Sunday

The Carlos Family "Historic Reunion" will be held Friday through Sunday in Camden. The reunion will kick off with a Friday night meet and greet at the Holiday Inn Express Conference Room from 6:30 to 10 p.m. It will continue Saturday night with a banquet hosted at TenEleven Galleria at 1011 Broad St. from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. The guest speaker for the banquet will be Dr. John W. Carlos, a Bronze Medal Recipient in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Carlos will be available for book signings and pictures Saturday evening.

A check and a pie

The Community Playground Project continues to close in on the fundraising goal of $300,000 to build a new playground at the West Wateree Recreation Complex on U.S. 1 between Lugoff and Elgin. The Lugoff Optimist Club presented a $1,000 check to the project Thursday, March 19. Playground Committee Chairperson Laurey Carpenter accepted the check from Henry Powers. The project also raised several thousand dollars Friday, March 20 with a gala and auction, including a "Pie in the Face" contest in which votes were cast by monetary donation.

Brevard scholarship winners announced

he Camden Music Association (CMA) and the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) announce the winners of the 2015 Brevard Music Competition. This year's competition was held at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church where 13 students competed for scholarships to further their musical endeavors. The competition and recital is sponsored by Sibby Wood in honor of her mother, Margaret Beckley Upton.

CHS, L-E baseball teams to step back in time

For the third straight year, the ping will be replaced by the sounds of the crack of the bat as the Kershaw-Richland Classic Spring Break Baseball Tournament returns to Camden's American Legion Park for a three-day run beginning on Monday. Thursday's final day of the tournament will be held at Richland Northeast High School, site of the other half of the bracket.

Making the rounds

A few hundred yards away, trucks carrying workers zig-zagged their way in and around the Springdale Race Course in final preparation for Saturday's 83rd running of the Carolina Cup. Tucked away in a barn located behind the National Steeplechase Museum, Brian Murphy stands atop the straw in a stall as he brushes down one of his horses with the only sound here being that of a few chirping birds on a relaxed Monday morning.

Historic Camden's Armies Through Time

Hundreds of people visited Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site last Saturday to learn about warfare through the ages. Guests got to interact with warriors from Ancient Greek wars, Medieval wars, 19th Century wars, World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War. Different stations were set up that featured artifacts, costumes and camps from different wars.

Arrants speaks to CCTC students

Josh Arrants, naturalist and C-I columnist, speaks to students in Central Carolina Technical College (CCTC) Natural Resources Management program Feb. 26 about the Red-cockaded Woodpecker Restoration Project at Fort Jackson. Arrants, a 2002 CCTC graduate, is a member of the S.C. Wildlife Federal Board, a Fort Jackson Wildlife Technician and former Camden resident who recently moved to Austin, Texas. He is returning frequently to work on the Fort Jackson project and continues to write his column. The students listening to Arrants' lecture are in NRM Department Chair Joshua Castleberry's class.
