A Lugoff man was killed in a two-vehicle collision on U.S. 521 after his Buick Century crossed into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle head on Friday evening.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Alanna Critzer Shepherd, 81, of Camden will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Bethesda Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. William F. "Chip" Summers, Jr. will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service in the John Knox Hall of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Voters are a tough bunch to satisfy these days. The number of people who are registered to vote as Democrat or Republican has plunged by 2.5 million since 2008, according to a new tally. Independent ranks have grown. Nonetheless, studies show, most independents still vote overwhelmingly for one party or the other, even if they don't want to admit that in public.

• South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier usually says what he thinks. We liked his comment regarding punter Joey Scribner-Howard following the Capitol One Bowl victory: "You never see me yell at our punter when he kicks one of those 25-yarders. He does it in practice, too." Of course, Spurrier could afford to be whimsical since the Gamecocks had won; his analysis might not have been so good-natured had they lost.
