Latino voters

Recent polls show, unsurprisingly, that President Obama holds an overwhelming lead among Latino voters, outdistancing Republican Mitt Romney by almost a three-to-one margin. Part of this is because of Obama's political posturing towards Hispanics, but part is also due to the GOP's failure to offer programs that appeal to the country's fastest-growing group. It follows the same trend that holds with African-American voters, who favor Obama -- or any other Democrat, for that matter -- by almost 90 percent.

Four seniors make debut at Cotillion

Camden's local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. hosted its Third Annual Debutante Cotillion, Crimson & Pearls: Impacting Lives with Grace and Elegance, on May 20 at the Historic Robert Mills Courthouse in Camden, South Carolina. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. This year, the local chapter of the sorority is proud to celebrate 30 years of service, scholarship and sisterhood to Camden and surrounding communities.

DOT to hold public hearing on 'road diet,' truck route

The public will have another chance to learn more -- and voice their opinions -- about two major transportation proposals in Camden. The S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will hold a second public hearing July 10 regarding both a proposed "road diet" for Camden's Broad Street and a proposed official truck route around the city.

Register for 2012 Conservation Day Camp

Beginning Tuesday, July 17, natural resource professionals will guide young explorers through three days of adventure at Goodale State Park. Sponsored by the Kershaw Conservation District, the 2012 Conservation Day Camp promises to be both a fun and educational experience as explorers take walks; learn to identify birds, plans and other wildlife; make art castings of tracks and other nature findings; and improve their skills at fishing with some hand-on S.C. Department of Natural Resources fishing instruction.

Hilbert Tucker

Mr. Hilbert Tucker entered into eternal life in route to Kershaw County Medical Center. Hilbert was born August 15, 1943 and departed his earthly body on Monday, June 18, 2012. He was the son of Zoelmore Tucker and the Late Hozie Mitchell. He received his education through the Kershaw County School System. He united in Holy Matrimony to Bertha Hill Tucker, August 15, 1991.

Camden receives grants to upgrade radio equipment

The city of Camden recently received a $45,000 grant from South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and a $64,121 grant from the S.C. Department of Public Safety that will be used to purchase upgraded radio equipment for city public safety personnel.
