Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are a 10-week-old male Labrador mix puppy and a 1-year-old male domestic medium-haired cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Slow-starting Spartans cruise past Providence AC

Sheheen is SC Addictions Professional of the Year

Frank Sheheen Jr., a lifelong resident of Camden, was awarded the South Carolina Addictions Professional of the Year by the S.C. Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (SCAADAC). The award was presented in November at the annual conference. The recipient receives this honor for significant contributions to the profession of addictions counseling in the areas of prevention, treatment, research and administration. Relay For Life fundraisers approaching in March

The City Slickers Car Show and Fundraiser for Relay For Life of Kershaw County will be held Saturday, March 26 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Tractor Supply Co. in Camden. The event will include a dunking booth with local celebrities, and people's choice awards for classics, "oldies but goodies," trucks, cycles and pro-mods. ‘Alice in Wonderland’ tumbles onto the FAC stage

It's a little bit Alice and a little bit Through the Looking Glass! Miss Camden Pageant to be held Saturday

The Miss Camden Pageant will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Camden High School. There will be two winners, Miss Camden and Miss Camden Teen. The girls competing are (first row) Ashley Bowers, Blythe Neal, Julianna Cobb, Virginia Baker, Amanda Bodie, (second row) Meagan Kirkley, Carley Powers, Sallie Pierce, Lauren Jeffcoat, Rebecca Cobb, Erica Catoe and Maggie Jones. Vincent Rawlinson

Vincent "Poppa" Rawlinson was born on October 22, 1965 in Columbia, SC. He was the son of the late James Rawlinson Sr. and Gracie Jacobs Rawlinson. Vincent, of Lugoff, entered into his eternal life on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at 2:14 p.m. He was a proud member of St. James Deliverance Pentecostal Assembly Church and their usher board.

Logan Raye, a luxury spa and salon that is well-known in the Columbia area, has opened a new facility at 1025 Broad St. in Camden. Sewell Gelberd, owner of Logan Raye in Columbia, said he heard via the beauty grapevine that an existing salon was closing shop in Camden. Camden Archives and Museum celebrates its centennial

One hundred years ago, in 1915, 1314 Broad St. was a construction site. Excavators and bricklayers, carpenters and heating contractors were busy at their task of building Camden's first city library. It had been an arduous journey getting to that point. That journey began in 1914, as best we can reckon, at a lecture to the Kershaw County Teachers Institute. In all of the factors leading up to the acquisition and completion of the Camden Public Library there is one constant: Sarah "Sadie" Kennedy Von Tresckow.

Recreation Dept. Volleyball league open for registration

The Kershaw County Parks and Recreation Department will host an instructional volleyball league. The league is for beginners and is open for girls ages 8 and up. Registration dates are until December 23. The registration fee is $40 and includes a shirt. The first practice will be January 7, 3:45 p.m. at the City Arena. KCSD receives two 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants

The Kershaw County School District (KCSD) is the only South Carolina school district to receive not just one, but two 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants for 2015. Partnering with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands, Jackson School and Pine Tree Hill Elementary School will house afterschool academic assistance programs.
