The election

With election day now in the rear-view mirror, all Kershaw County residents from the staunchest, most bleeding-heart Democrat to the most rabid, reactionary Republican probably agree on one matter: that campaigns at every level last too long, are too expensive and focus too much on negative advertising. It won't be more than a few days before national pundits will begin speculating on which candidates are so-called front-runners for the 2016 election, and we'll be subjected to endless political chatter once again.

Unique gifts

Almost all former teachers have gifts from their pupils -- notes, pictures, jewelry, household dishes. I have an inordinate amount. One I gave back to the presenters because it was so precious: a counted cross stitch picture with a beautiful teacher dedication. You see, three students from the same family were involved. The male from the family had demanded that he be included when his sisters did the work, so he gave money to purchase it. NCMS holds mock election

The Kershaw County Election Commission partnered with North Central Middle School to pull off a very successful Mock Student Election which was held in the school library on Thursday, Nov. 1. Ten actual voting booths, borrowed from the Election Commission, were set up for students who simultaneously participated in a larger National Student Mock Election through vote.myvoicemyelection.org. • We're sad to learn of Joseph Bruce's pending retirement from KershawHealth and the KershawHealth Foundation (see our front page), but happy for him as he reaches that point in life where he can choose do what he appears to enjoy: namely traveling to the United Kingdom and other points abroad. Bruce had the difficult job of following foundation founder Vern Ketchem, who died just months before Bruce joined KershawHealth in late 2007. God gave me the gift of life through my parents, Lawton M. Truesdale (deceased) and Virginia S. Truesdale on November 20, 1948. I have been a fortunate man who led a successful and full life in Camden, SC. For 30 years I worked at the City of Camden in the electrical and administration department. I retired in 1996.
