Priorities

I would like to address several concerns that I have as a taxpayer and a concerned citizen. We moved here a few years ago due to the charm, laidback living, and the way everyone took pride in their community. This is not the type of first impression of our town that we want to give.

Political polls

Like voters across the United States, we in Kershaw County are in the midst of being pummeled by almost constant "poll news." It seems that nearly every day there is a new political poll proving that one candidate or the other is the strongest choice for the White House. During the entire Republican primary, various candidates have pointed to polls showing them as most likely to defeat President Obama in November. Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are both touting themselves as the only member of the GOP who can unseat Obama in the fall.

Feature photo: Seasonal attire

In one of their science units, Midway Elementary School kindergarteners learned about the differences in the seasons of the year. Obama’s ‘dart’ at GOP

Lawyers of every political persuasion are lining up in Washington to have their say on the legality or illegality of the plan President Obama intends to implement regarding amnesty for illegal aliens who are in the United States without proper authorization, with one major network saying the president's plan to take the immigration system into his own hands "is a daring test of the limits of presidential power."

Pope calls for family resurrection

WASHINGTON -- News that Pope Francis will visit the U.S. next year for the triennial World Meeting of Families brings elation to Catholics, excitement to pope watchers -- and perhaps a little chagrin to some who too soon interpreted Francis' broad compassion as a precursor to doctrinal changes related to marriage.

Camden’s African-American corridor

In 2008, a group of graduate students from the University of South Carolina's Public History Program produced a study entitled, "The Camden African-American Heritage Project." It was the product of a student group assignment conducted in 2005-06. The students were assisted by many Camden residents in their search for the history of African-Americans in Camden from the Colonial period through the era of civil rights. In their final recommendations they suggested, among other things, that an ...

Sheheen: ‘It is the journey that matters most’

I try to live life as a journey full of unknown destinations. And I do believe it is the journey that matters most. During the last year, I was blessed enough to experience a journey throughout our wonderful state of South Carolina. A campaign for governor is a journey through the hearts and souls of many people and places. A statewide campaign is sometimes brutal and sometimes joyful, but never dull. I treasure that journey and thank my friends in Camden and Kershaw County for letting me experience it.
