Pets of the week -- Oct. 21, 2011

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are George, a 3-year-old neutered Beagle, and Pepsi, a female calico cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Outreach Bicycles aims to provide 100 children with wheels this holiday season

It's the time of year when Outreach Bicycles for Needy Children continues to advance the cause of donating bicycles to a needy child. This year, Alesha Hudson's (right) goal is to donate 100 bicycles. She did not reach her goal last year of 100, but was able to collect a total of 85 bikes and see 85 smiling faces.

Five generations together

On Aug. 2, Jillian Leigh Odom and Charles "Charlie" Allen Furniss announced the birth of a baby boy, Mason Allen Furniss. Mason then became the fifth living generation in the family. Great-great-grandmother Sara Douglas Morris, great-grandmother Alice Morris Furness, grandfather Charlie "Allen" Furniss, father Charles "Charlie" Allen Furniss, and son Mason Allen Furniss are featured in the photo.

FAC brings drive-in movie, Finally Friday concert series to Camden

The Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) is planning two family-oriented events this month. A Drive-In Movie Night is scheduled for Saturday beginning at 7:30 p.m. featuring Stephen Spielberg's popular movie, "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial." The following weekend marks the return of the popular outdoor music series, Finally Friday, with its Halloween edition from 6 until 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28. Admission to both events is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Camden Music Association to host fall general meeting

The Camden Music Association will host its fall general meeting at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Douglas Reed House, on the grounds of the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County. The objective of the Camden Music Association is to give young musicians of the whole county a venue to showcase their talents and provide scholarships to help in their music study.

United Way challenge

Camden High and Lugoff-Elgin High students used the week leading up to their rival football game to raise money for the United Way of Kershaw County. As announced at halftime of the football game, Lugoff-Elgin High raised $40,748.20 and Camden High raised $24,825.81, new all-time high amounts for both schools and over $26,000 more than last year's total. Over the past six years, the two schools have brought in over $182,000 to help the local community.
