Teach an old (or new) dog some new tricks!

With summer quickly approaching and the school year coming to a close, outdoor activities are in full swing. This means more time available to be spent outdoors with family and friends. One family member that might receive more attention with summer is one commonly referred to as "man's best friend." That's right, the family dog. What better way to spend quality time than learning skills to teach your favorite pet some new tricks. It turns out you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Wiley Kelley’s role in filling CSA ‘bread baskets’

Along the eastern edge of Kershaw County flow the Little and Big Lynches rivers. European settlers received land grants along these two rivers in the three decades preceding the Revolutionary War. They began to plant and cultivate crops in the rich bottom lands bordering these rivers and during the next half century, several large plantations developed. One such plantation was that of David and Elizabeth Tyner Kelley and their son Wiley Kelley (1795-1873).

Noted and passed - June 3, 2013

• We can't think of a better recipient of the Boy Scouts' Citizen of the Year award than Jack Brantley, the Camden caterer who's carved out friendships throughout South Carolina. Brantley's personal magnetism has helped him establish a thriving business and has also helped spread Camden's reputation. He's always been generous in helping local causes and in donating the use of his home, Aberdeen, for community affairs.

LFD adopts ‘Adopt-A-Fire Truck’ program

In March, the Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) launched a new outreach program into the two elementary schools within its fire district in an effort to help educate young children in fire prevention and firefighter identification. The program, titled "Adopt-A-Fire Truck," involves LFD firefighters dressing out in their full firefighting gear to include the air packs as they arrive at the elementary school. Firefighters then enter the school into the library or classroom and read books to the kids. Fire crews then escort the classes out to the fire trucks and share fire prevention tips while showing off the trucks and ...

Garcia-Quintana

South Carolina Democrats were right in recently criticizing Gov. Nikki Haley for her refusal -- she later relented -- to oust a member of her re-election committee who had ties to the Council of Conservative Citizens, a far-right group with severe overtones of racial bias. That group believes, according to its own website, that "the American people and government should remain European in their composition and character." That's a fancy way of explaining racial purity.

A time to think

Maybe it is time to think. Think about the importance of our lives and what we are all bout. Do we do the "same old, same all" or do we interact with who we are and what life is all about and how all this has to do with the creative spirit and the freedom to explore and act upon the validity of ourselves.
