We have lost count now of the number of times Congress has come to the brink of shutting the government down. We now find ourselves in the same situation we have on other occasions, with dysfunctional Republicans and incompetent Democrats heaving insults back and forth at each other in Washington while American voters shake their heads in dismay.

A Fire Fest fire safety checklist

In conjunction with this weekend's Fire Fest at Rhame Arena, the Camden Fire Department has released its 2013 Fire Prevention Checklist. Fire Fest, including the annual parade and many new features, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Organizers plan to honor the 90th anniversary of the Cleveland School Fire, which killed many people, but led to new building codes in South Carolina.

Local writer and gardener published in Petigru Review

The South Carolina's Writer's Workshop (SCWW) has announced the list of contributors for the 2013 Petigru Review, the annual SCWW member anthology. Among the authors featured in Volume 7 of this anthology is local resident Bobbi Adams of Bishopville. Adams' essay "Scrambled Eggs" is included in the nonfiction section of Petigru Review.

The 2013 Petigru Review will be unveiled at the SCWW Symposium in Columbia, October 26. Submissions were judged and selections were made by Susan Williams, Mary Anne Benedetto and Celia Rivenbark for nonfiction. For more information about the SCWW visit www.myscww.org/conference.

Funeral services for Brinton Maurice Motley, 73, will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Faith Church of the Nazarene with burial to follow in Union Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev.
