City's leadership failing its citizens

As a public citizen, I take offense at the manner in which the business of Camden is being conducted. Suggesting (in public) that "council members have been giving out false information" shows, in my opinion, a lack of leadership abilities. If the Mayor has a problem with Council members or members of the public, he should deal with that problem as any good businessman does -- in private. As a public citizen, my statements (a year or so ago) were also called into question by the Mayor (in the press) regarding a meeting about the railroad depot -- there could be others ...

Noted and passed

• Spin is a way of life in Washington, but House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi carried it to new heights last week. When George Bush was president and Democrats controlled the House, she blamed everything in the world, maybe even including bad weather, on Bush. Now that Barack Obama is president and the economy is still struggling, she blames all the world's woes on Republicans, who have a majority in the house. "They hold the power," Pelosi says. Right.

Put these FTAs to work

Some Americans act as if Congress and the president have a jobs-making switch somewhere they can flip to help the economy. If only. No modern economy is that simple. And the factors that affect employment can be complex.

It doesn't slow down...

I stopped by the Farmer's Market on Memorial Day weekend, and I ran into a neighbor who said something to me about how it must be nice in the summer when things slow down. Admittedly, summer does provide the opportunity for some rest and recharging. But in reality, our school district remains unbelievably busy over the summer. Getting ready for a new school year is a monumental and complex task.

Pride and humility

It has become somewhat of an art for me, that of studying Southern culture and deciphering what makes us different from others as well as downright peculiar among ourselves.

The storytellers of Dillon County

Our family has spent many a pleasant summer day with several families from the Dillon area and the experience is always enjoyable and the manner in which they address their friends, neighbors and kinfolk is like taking a step back in the "Old South." Everyone seems to have a prefix or you are a tourist just stopping by.

Team player

Lugoff-Elgin High School Principal Worth Thomasson braces himself for a splash of icy cold water as L-EHS football players and cheerleaders look on. Thomasson agreed to be "dunked" if L-EHS students raised $5000 by Thursday morning to donate to the United Way of Kershaw County. Students ended up raising $5300. "We wanted something that would get the kids involved in with a team aspect ... It kind of goes along with the United Way spirit, you can give a dollar, and that dollar goes a long way," Thomasson said. See more pictures in our Localife section.

An icy challenge

Thursday marked a special day for Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) students. Not only did they beat their Thursday morning goal of raising $5,000 for the United Way of Kershaw County (they raised $5,300), they got to see cheerleaders, ball players and the L-EHS Demon mascot douse Principal Worth Thomasson not once, but three times with ice cold water for their efforts.

Noted and passed - Aug. 25, 2014

• Every now and then a story just makes you want to puff up with pride. We had one Wednesday, and we'll have another this Wednesday, both on the same subject: the renaming of the I-20 bridge over the Wateree River for Kershaw County's three medal of honor winners. Richmond Hobson Hilton, John C. Villepigue and Donald Leroy Truesdell are heroes out of history in no uncertain terms. In our preview story, readers learned that Hilton charged gunners firing at his squad, firing until his ammunition was spent, killing six enemies and capturing 10, but lost an arm as ...
