Justice Roberts

One of the offshoots of our politically divided nation is a similarly divided Supreme Court. We would all like to think that justices ponder every case on its own merits without letting political philosophy jaundice their thinking, but that is not the case. And most justices appointed in recent years can be reliably predicted to come down on a particular side of an issue; that often revolves around so-called liberal or conservative doctrine. The "swing vote" justice is becoming a rare breed, indeed.

Civil War-time fare

If you were a Carolina lady in the 1850s, you would likely have a copy of the latest and most fashionable cookbook of the times -- The Carolina Housewife. The little book was written by "A Lady of Charleston" and published in 1847. The "Lady" was Sarah Rutledge, daughter of Edward Rutledge, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The Camden Archives and Museum has an 1851 edition of the book in our collection. Miss Gardner, Mr. Richardson wed

Ashley Rebecca Gardner and Kenneth Wayne Richardson, Jr., were joined in marriage on June 8, 2013 in Camden, South Carolina. The traditional double ring ceremony took place at 7:00 in the evening at the First Baptist Church of Camden and was officiated by Reverend William Bates Howard, III.

The Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County will hold its annual meeting on September 19 at 6 p.m. in the Jim and Pat Watts Performing Arts Wing of the FAC. Donors, friends, participants and volunteers are invited to gather as the FAC reviews its accomplishments in 2012-2013 and announces its plans for the upcoming 2013-2014 season, which will be the FAC's 40th year.

Miss Oliver, Mr. Dale wed

Chelsea Lamb Oliver of Lugoff, South Carolina and now Montgomery, Alabama, and James "Sebe" Seaborn Dale IV of Columbia, Mississippi, and now Montgomery, Ala., were married on August 3, 2013, at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden. The 6:30 p.m. ceremony was officiated by Reverend John L. Hallman. The ceremony was traditional double-ring. A reception followed at Old McCaskill's farm.

Tax breaks

Most people here in Kershaw County -- and across the country, for that matter -- would have a ready answer if they were asked where most of the tax breaks in the United States go. They'd probably answer that large corporations get them, at the expense of individuals. But a recent study compiled by a national publication reveals that more than 90 percent of all tax breaks go to individuals, and that personal tax breaks have risen seven times faster than corporate breaks, to the point that such tax "payments" now amount to nearly $1.2 trillion a year.
