Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Aladdin, an 8-week-old male domestic shorthaired kitten, and Mackey, a 3-month-old tan and white hound mix puppy. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Growing green for the community

Sarah Elizabeth Hilton, 9, took part in the National Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program for third-grade students. The program offers students a hands-on gardening experience by giving them the tools to grow colossal cabbages. Sarah's cabbage grew to a whopping 24 pounds. Elgin resident doesn’t like L-EHS ‘Demon’ nickname

An Elgin resident expressed displeasure with Lugoff-Elgin High School's "Demon" nickname and the appearance of the school's cheerleaders and basketball players during Tuesday night's Kershaw County Board of School Trustees' meeting. In return, trustees later expressed displeasure with the words the woman used during the meeting's public comment time.
