We hear lots of talk, especially around election time, about improving schools in South Carolina. What we don't hear much about is what a truly world class school would look like, or how we would go about creating such a thing.

KH nurse receives Palmetto Gold Award

Gina Allen, a registered nurse in KershawHealth's oncology department, has been named one of 100 nurses from across South Carolina to receive the 2014 Palmetto Gold Award. A coalition of nurses created the award in 2002 to showcase nursing's valuable contributions to patient care and to support scholarships for students enrolled in South Carolina registered nurse programs.

Second Look Charities awards Mildred Yvonne Williams Scholarship

Second Look Charities provides $6,000 yearly in scholarship support to the Foundation Scholars Program at Central Carolina Technical College (CCTC). Two of the recipients are Alice Holmes and Emily Tidwell. Holmes and Tidwell received the Mildred Yvonne Williams Scholarship named in memory of a dedicated Second Look Charities volunteer.

Camden Seniors and Friends group donates goods to DSS

Recently, Thelma Rutledge and members of Camden Seniors and Friends donated books, stuffed animals and pillow cases to children in the Department of Social Services (DSS) system. Rutledge explained the group wanted to give back to these children. "We bought the stuffed animals and goods and delivered them," she said. Rutledge stated that she handmade the 50 pillowcases that were donated.

C-I wins coveted SCPA Montgomery FOI Award

For the first time in its history, the Chronicle-Independent won the S.C. Press Association's (SCPA) Reid H. Montgomery Freedom of Information Award. The SCPA presented the award -- one of its most prestigious -- to C-I Editor Martin L. Cahn and Localife Editor Haley Atkinson during the association's annual meeting Saturday in Columbia.
