There’s a new sheriff’s office in town

Tuesday night I attended the Kershaw County Sheriff Office's community update in the West Wateree area. I want to echo what one of your readers expressed some time ago. We are indeed blessed to have Sheriff Matthews and his committed deputies protecting us. I have lived in Elgin for 13 years. Several of my neighbors and I have been victims of home invasions or car break-ins. Over the years, I have watched little, peaceful Elgin begin an evolution into the Wild, Wild West, but there is truly a new sheriff in town!

Noted and passed -- Feb. 27, 2012

• A recent news story indicated that this year's mild winter had confused plants and animals alike. Flowering shrubs and trees seem to think that it's already spring, and humans are sniffling with allergies which don't normally show up until late March or April. But we'd wager that nearly everyone in Kershaw County has taken great pleasure in the lack of cold weather and the unseasonably warm days which have allowed people to be outdoors and enjoying themselves. By this time in February, we're usually weary of scraping frost off windshields and wearing heavy coats, but ...

House busy with budget, bills

This past week the House of Representatives returned to Columbia following a week of furlough. Each week the House takes on furlough saves the state $50,000. The House will take two more weeks of furlough in April. The House has repeatedly passed bills to shorten the legislative session only for them to die in the Senate. The House has taken upon itself to effectively shorten its session through furloughs because House members believe that we can accomplish our objectives in fewer weeks and save taxpayer money.

The Harrell case

It was another black eye for South Carolina last week when Rep. Bobby Harrell, speaker of the House of Representatives, was indicted by a Richland County grand jury on nine counts, including illegally using campaign money for personal expenses, filing false campaign disclosures and misconduct in office. Harrell suspended himself -- how's that for an oddity? -- and will now face his government accusers. South Carolina certainly doesn't have a monopoly on political malfeasance but the Palmetto State has had more than its share of governmental scandal. We say that fully recognizing that Harrell is innocent until proven guilty.

More on S.C. snakes

Though the calendar has now been flipped to the month of September and autumn is right around the corner, here in South Carolina it is still very much summer according to the thermometer. Days are getting shorter, but lower temperatures don't usually make it to South Carolina to signal the end of summer until well into October. Birds have begun their annual migrations south, but the heat and humidity that still lingers continues to keep snakes very active. Being exothermic, or cold-blooded as I was taught in elementary school, snakes take environmental warmth and warm themselves to activate processes ...
