Not too elastic

By now, everyone is accustomed to being bombarded by different presidential polls that purport to indicate how the race between President Obama and Mitt Romney is going. Many of these focus on the so-called swing states -- those that are still up in the air and will probably decide the election. But political analyst Nate Silver, who's been extremely accurate in predicting political goings-on in the past, has a new measure, and South Carolina ranks at the very top.

Obama vs. Romney: meanest campaign ever?

Is this the nastiest presidential campaign ever? That's a toughie. Past campaigns have set the bar so low that, to quote a senior advisor to Mitt Romney, "I don't think a world champion limbo dancer could get any lower."

Moment of Nature -- Aug. 24, 2012

This job affords me the luxury of being outside, which I love. During these past two years, I've had the opportunity to observe and capture many moments of nature up close as I prune young trees, perform tree exams and/or water our newly planted trees. The Chronicle-Independent has graciously allowed me to begin sharing my various nature experiences and knowledge of trees with you. It is my hope that your knowledge be enriched by the many wonders right here in our fair city.

Thomas Britton White Jr.

For ninety years, seven months and ten days, Thomas Britton White, Jr. of Camden had a very good run. Sadly, it ended on Saturday, March 14, 2015 with Andy and Debbie by his side. After a courageous, decades-long battle with pigweed, he succumbed to a brief bout with lymphoma. He left us convinced that if that pesky weed is, in fact, present in Heaven, there will also be a herbicide that is 100% effective against it. Further, he did not expect to find squirrels there when he arrived last Saturday evening.
