It all really began with the Haile Gold Mine. The Eldredge family of New York – the Hobkirk Inn Eldredges – purchased the mine in 1880. The family owned gold mines in California, Virginia, and Mexico. Son, Frank W. Eldredge, was installed here as manager of the Haile mine. Frank's son, Inman, wrote that the living quarters at the mine "were a bit crude," so when his mother was expecting in 1882 his father bought Pine Flat from Mrs. William Shannon.

Tyler Kirkland receives Legacy of Learning scholarship

The Water Environment Association of South Carolina (WEASC) has awarded a $1,500 Legacy of Learning Scholarship to University of South Carolina (USC) student Tyler Kirkland of Camden. The Legacy of Learning Scholarship was established to encourage students pursuing a career in the environmental field. Kirkland,is a rising senior majoring in chemical engineering at USC with a 3.3 grad point average.

Phillips fishes his way to victory in BFL event at Lake Wateree

Steve Phillips of Lugoff weighed a five-bass limit totaling 19 pounds, 12 ounces Saturday to win the third Walmart Bass Fishing League South Carolina Division tournament of 2014 on Lake Wateree. For his victory, Phillips earned $4,977.
